Historical Tour

The Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (SRSC) at Algoma University, invites you to attend an upcoming historical tour.

The tours are essential for all visitors, faculty, staff, and students “to truly serve Algoma University’s special mission and the Centre’s mandate to help realize Chief Shingwauk’s vision, we must first place our stories in the context of the forever history of Anishinaabe peoples, languages, and cultures. That is how we get to the history and living legacy of Canada’s Residential Schools and the work AU is doing with its partners to give back what these systems sought to take away. It makes what we do here, regardless of our roles on campus, that much more special if we know what we are truly a part of.”

The historical tour is offered to anyone interested in learning about the history of the Shingwauk and Wawanosh Residential School site. The tours teach community members about the legacy of the residential schools across Canada and the unique history of residential schools in Sault Ste. Marie.

The historical tour includes the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre, Shingwauk Hall, the Shingwauk Auditorium, Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig/the former Principal’s Residence, the Bishop Fauqier Memorial Chapel, the Shingwauk Cemetery, the Carpenter’s Shop, and the Shingwauk grounds.

The tour is approximately one hour long and includes an outdoor portion. Participants should dress according to the weather. Those interested in attending should meet in room EW 202. For more information contact the Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre.
