Office of Research and Innovation Colloquium Series

The Office of Research and Innovation invites all faculty and students to attend a lecture given by Dr. Michael Graydon at 3 pm on Nov. 2nd in the Doc Brown Lounge as part of its monthly colloquium series. The lecture is entitled “How could this happen to us? – Sault Ste. Marie’s English-Only Resolution”.

In 1990, Sault Ste Marie City Council passed a resolution affirming English as the working language of local government. For local French citizens this was an ugly diminishing of access to local government and a denial of their rich cultural contributions to the city. For many outside the Sault, the resolution was symptomatic of Canada’s failure to solve the English/French linguistic question. Opportunistically, Mayor Joe Fratesi used the resolution to win an election while pro- and anti-French forces stoked fears of a larger existential crisis. While useful for many in fulfilling political agendas, the Resolution reflected local and situated tensions to do with language and cultural recognition.

A cash bar will be available.
