Algoma Powderpuff Football

The Algoma University Thunderbirds Powderpuff Football team is planning on travelling to Waterloo, Ontario to compete in the annual OUA Powderpuff Women’s Flag Football Tournament in February that is held at the University of Wilfred Laurier to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

The all-women’s squad relies upon fundraising and sponsorship to cover the cost of bus transportation to Wilfred Laurier and hotel accommodation in Waterloo during the tournament.  In total, the team raises annually though bake sales, a Greyhounds’ game “chuck-a-puck”, and their inventive “chuck-a-buck”.

Approximately 30 teams from universities across Ontario compete in the annual tournament in hopes of one day eliminating breast cancer.  Each team is responsible for covering an entrance fee to the tournament.  All fees go toward breast cancer research.

The Algoma University squad, travelling the farthest to compete, provides females in the Sault Ste. Marie community with an opportunity to participate in a positive and educational setting to learn the fundamentals of football while also building strong friendships, team unity, and strengthening individual athleticism and well-being.

All women are able to come out and join as we do incorporate Sault College students and the general public.  Women of any age can come out as it’s meant to be fun and it’s also for a great cause.

Try outs and practices will begin the second week of September after O-Week is complete.
