Emancipation Day Keynote Speaker Event: Dr. Cheryl Thompson
The EDI office invites you to participate in the “Thinking Beyond ‘Black Excellence,'” A keynote speaker event led by Dr. Cheryl Thompson in honour of Emancipation Day.
This lecture, organized by the Algoma University EDI Anti-Black Racism Working Committee, will highlight the endurance, resilience, and contributions of people of African descent to the development of Canada
Speaker Bio: Dr. Cheryl is an Associate Professor in Performance at The Creative School, Toronto Metropolitan University. She is the author of Uncle: Race, Nostalgia, and the Politics of Loyalty (2021) and Beauty in a Box: Detangling the Roots of Canada’s Black Beauty Culture (2019). Her highly anticipated next book, Canada and the Blackface Atlantic: Performing Slavery, Conflict, and Freedom, 1812 – 1897, will be published by Wilfrid Laurier Press in April 2025.
