Invitation to International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination Keynote Presentation
The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion office and the EDI Committee Working Group invite you to International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
On March 21, Algoma University will observe the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day marks the tragic events of 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa, where 69 peaceful protesters were killed while opposing apartheid’s “pass laws.” It serves as a reminder of the ongoing global struggle for racial justice and the importance of solidarity in standing against all forms of racial discrimination.
This year’s theme, “60th Anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD)”, urges us to reflect deeply on the significant progress made over the past six decades while recognizing our ongoing challenges. It also calls us all to take responsibility in combatting racial injustice in our communities. In keeping with this theme, we are honoured to welcome John A. Ariyo, the Executive Director of the Scarborough Charter Secretariat on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education, who will deliver a keynote titled “Solidarity in Addressing Racial Discrimination and Algoma University’s Commitment to the Scarborough Charter.”
