National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (Dec 6, 2022)

Today, as part of our ongoing commitment to ending gender-based violence, we ask all members of the Algoma University community to take time to recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Each year, the commemoration date falls on Dec 6th, the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in which an armed student murdered fourteen women and injured ten others in the name of “fighting feminism”.

It has been over 30 years since this senseless act of targeted violence and I encourage all members of the Algoma University community to take time to reflect on those who have experienced gender-based violence, the broader societal impacts of this issue, and what we can do, individually and collectively, to put a stop to such heinous acts.

Women in Crisis has organized an event in Sault Ste. Marie to honour and remember the women who have lost their lives to gender-based violence.
