This scholarship rewards returning students demonstrating academic achievement in their previous year of their degree program. Students must achieve a minimum 75% overall average in their previous full time fall/winter academic year, demonstrate a financial need, and be studying full time over the current fall/winter academic year. Separate application is required and must be submitted by September 15 for consideration.

The Alexander M. Ross Bursary Award provides financial assistance to two students in either 3rd or 4thyear of studies in humanities with a minimum average of 70% who has demonstrated financial need.  This award is non-renewable.

The Algoma Steel Inc. Award provides an annual bursary to an Algoma University student, enrolled in full-time studies in Business, Computer Science or Chemistry. The candidate must be in good academic standing and have a demonstrated financial need. First consideration for the award will be given to a child, grandchild or legal ward of a current or retiree of Algoma Steel Inc. Second consideration will be given to a student in full-time studies in business, computer science or chemistry, in good academic standing and with a demonstrated financial need, who is a graduate of a secondary school in the Algoma region of Ontario. Recipients of this award will have demonstrated an open and respectful attitude, maturity, entrepreneurial ability, accountability and a willingness to participate in community life. This award is non-renewable.

The Algoma U Special Bursary Program offers financial assistance to students studying part-time at the post-secondary level for the first time or for students wanting to pursue academic upgrading on a full or part-time basis to advance their employment-related skills. Assisting students from families that rely on provincial social assistance (Ontario Works) or the Ontario Disability Support Program is a priority of this program. Students receiving aid through the Algoma U Special Bursary Program cannot also be receiving financial aid through OSAP or other Algoma U funding (except Bursary for Students With Disabilities funding). The bursary will first be applied to any balance owing on the student’s account with Algoma University. Specific eligibility criteria is listed on the Special Bursary Program info sheet (PDF).

The Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District Bursary will be used annually to provide a $600 award to a student in their 2nd, 3rdor 4thyear of full-time studies in the Honours Bachelor of Social Work Program at Algoma University. He/she will have a demonstrated financial need, with an average of 70% or greater. This award is non-renewable.

The Askin Family Bursary provides an award to a student in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Exceptional Expense Bursary provides up to 100% in tuition coverage through a non-repayable bursary for students that are currently in or are former youth in care through Ontario’s Extended Society Care program. A letter from the agency (e.g. Children’s Aid Society) will be required as a part of the application. This bursary can be renewed each year for a maximum of three additional years for a four year degree. Separate application is required and is posted at the start of each semester.

The Brookfield Power First Nation Environmental Science Student Award will provide financial assistance to an Indigenous student who is studying Biology or Chemistry, who is in good academic standing and has a demonstrated financial need. In the event that an eligible candidate is not available, the award will be given to an Indigenous student who is in good academic standings and has a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Christine Paquette Bursary will be provide a $500 bursary to a female student who is in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of studies in the Psychology Program, has a minimum 70% average and has a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Dr. Jong You Student Award will provide a bursary to a student who is studying full-time in the Community Economic and Social Development Program, who is in good academic standing and has a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Dr. Ken McLarty Research Award was created to assist students undertaking valuable research in the human services field of study. The Dr. Ken McLarty Research Award is to be awarded annually to a student conducting research into the thesis portion of academic requirements for completion of a senior honours course. Students must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need.  Applications for the award must be accompanied by a letter of support for the research project from the Geography Department, or the department’s successor. In a year in which there are no qualifying applications from the Geography Department or successor, the Geography Department may consider research project proposals with significant geographic relevance associated disciplines. This award is non-renewable.

The Dr. Robert V. d’Amato Student Award will provide financial assistance to a student who is studying English, Fine Arts or Music, who is in good academic standing and has demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

Through a generous contribution from the late brothers, Edward & Frank McGrath, bursary awards are available for students with a minimum 70% average, who are enrolled in full-time studies, and who have demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Elsie Anne Savoie Fine Arts Award will provide an annual bursary to a student in the Fine Arts degree program who is in good academic standing and has demonstrated financial need. Second consideration will be given to a student in good academic standing who has demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The e-Sports Scholarship, funded by the Province of Ontario, provides awards to eligible students that are studying at Algoma University over the Fall/Winter academic year in either the BBA with an eSports specialization or a Computer Science program with a gaming-related specialization that may lead to a career in video gaming and/or e-Sports. The scholarships will be awarded based on merit and financial need. A separate application is required and is posted in October.

A fund established to honour the memory of Evan D. Young provides an annual bursary to an upper year, mature student enrolled in full-time studies including at least one 6 credit science course. The recipient will be in good academic standing and will have a demonstrated financial need.

This bursary provides students with additional funding for costs not covered through any other source, such as the costs of taking a sixth course in a term when OSAP only funds five. This program can also help with medical or disability related costs not funded through other programs. A separate application is required and is posted on the Student Portal each term.

The Financial Aid Bursary is available to eligible students that have a financial need after accessing available resources. Separate application required and is posted on the Student Portal in October, January, and May.

Established by friends and family of Gerald Nori, a long-time supporter of Algoma University and Algoma University Foundation, the Gerald E. Nori Q.C. Student Assistance Bursary provides awards to students in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

Created by Quattra CSC, in memory of Gloria Jean Grossett, this award provides financial assistance to a female student enrolled in full-time studies, who is in good academic standing and demonstrates financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Great West Life Assistance Bursary for Indigenous Students provides financial awards to Indigenous students entering their 3rd or 4th year of full-time studies in any program. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum average of 70% and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Great West Life Student Assistance Bursary provides awards to students entering their 3rd or 4th year of studies in the Business Administration Program. To be eligible, candidates must have a minimum average of 70% and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Hannah Lois Morris Bursary will provide an award of $500 to a student in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of studies in the Social Work Program. To be eligible, the candidate can be enrolled in either part-time or full-time studies. He/she must maintain a minimum average of 70% and must have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Indigenous Students Assistance Fund provides awards of up to $500 to Indigenous Students who are in good academic standing and who have demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Indigenous Student Bursary, funded by the Province of Ontario, provides aid to First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit students that are residents of Ontario and have a demonstrated financial need. Prior to applying for this bursary students are expected to exhaust all other financial means for funding their education, including savings, work income, family support, government income, and other as appropriate. Separate application required and is posted on the Student Portal in October.

Established with a generous bequest from the Estate of Joanna Bischoping, this bursary provides awards of up to $1,400 each to mature students enrolled in full-time studies, who are in good academic standing, and who demonstrate financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The John Rowswell, M.Eng., P.Eng., P.E. Bursary Award will provide a $1,000 bursary to a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student studying in a Science related program. To be eligible, candidates must have graduated from a high school in the Algoma District, and must be enrolled in a full course load of 30 credits over two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study. The candidate must maintain a minimum average of 70% and must have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

A gift from the Algoma District Law Association in honour of the late District Court Judge. M.G. Gould, provides one bursary annually. Candidates must be Anishinaabe (First Nation, Metis, or Inuit), demonstrate financial need and be in good academic standing.

The Katherine Jean Dunster Student Award provides financial assistance to a mature student defined as over 30 years of age, is in good academic standing and has demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore Bursary will provide an annual award of $625 to a single parent student, studying either full-time or part-time in any program of study. The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need and must be in good academic standing. This award is non-renewable.

The Kiwanis Club of Sault Ste. Marie bursaries will be used annually to provide two $500 awards to upper year students enrolled in the Social Work program.The recipients must be a full-time student enrolled in 24 credits, a resident of Sault Ste. Marie, and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Living Learning Student Assistance Fund provides awards to support students who are in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

Recipients of the award must be Metis Section 35 right-holders as confirmed by the Provisional Council of the Metis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO) set out in Policy #2022-002 “Verification of MNO Citizenship File Status to Other Governments and Third Party Institutions.”  Applicants will be required to provide consent to verification of status.

Applicants must be in academic good standing and have demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Ontario First Generation Bursary, funded by the Province of Ontario, provides financial assistance in the form of a bursary to Ontario students that are the first generation in their family to participate in postsecondary studies. First consideration for this award may be given to students that are attending postsecondary in their first degree, diploma, certificate or program. Students must be attending full time, be in good academic and financial standing with OSAP and Algoma U, and demonstrate a financial need. Separate application required and is posted on the Student Portal in October.

The OSSTF District 35 – AUSS Bursary provides two awards of $800 each to students who are enrolled in full-time studies, are in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need.

The Professor Tony Sharman Bursary will be used annually to provide an award, valued at $1000, to a student in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of studies at Algoma University in either an English, Music or Fine Arts program. To be eligible he/she must have demonstrated financial need, have an average of 70% or greater, and be enrolled in full-time studies with a course load of 24 credits over two consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). This award is non-renewable.

The Retired Teachers of Algoma – District 3 Bursary will provide a $500 bursary to a student in their 2nd year of full-time studies, who has demonstrated significant commitment to volunteering over the last 18 month, is in good academic standing and who has a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Richard M. Haynes Bursary Award will provide two $1,000 bursaries to 2nd year students in the Psychology and/or Sociology Program who has a 70% or higher academic average and who has demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Rita Adams Bursary will be used annually to provide an award, valued at $500, to mature students in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of studies at Algoma University. To be eligible the candidate must have demonstrated financial need, and be enrolled in full-time or part-time in any Bachelor of Arts program.  This award is non-renewable.

The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie Bursary will provide one award of $1,000 to a student entering their first year of studies at Algoma University and one award of $1,500 to a student entering their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of studies at Algoma University. Recipients must self-identify as having a disability (type of disability), be enrolled in a minimum 40% course load, be in good academic standing, and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #25 Achievement Award provides five student awards to Algoma University students studying in Mathematics, Biology, General Arts and Computer Science/Information Technology. These awards are given to students who are enrolled in full-time studies in each of these programs, who have graduated from a secondary school within the City of Sault Ste. Marie, who are in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Sardar & Rajwant Sohi Rotary Bursary will provide an award of $1,500 to a candidate in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of study in the Biology or Biosciences Program.  To be eligible, the candidate must be enrolled in full-time studies, with a course load of 30 credits over two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study.  He/she must maintain a minimum average of 70% and must have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Sault Recreation Hockey Association Fun through Recreation Award will provide two bursaries to students entering their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of full-time studies at Algoma University. Candidates must be in good academic standing, have a demonstrated financial need, and will have participated in minor hockey (house league level) as a player or coach. Priority shall be given to students who also provide information that they were participants in a league of the Sault Recreation Hockey Association. Candidates for this award will be required to provide additional information to support their request. This award is non-renewable.

The Sault Ste. Marie Professional Fire Fighters, Local 529 Bachelor of Business Administration Bursary will be used annually to provide a $500 bursary to a student in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of studies in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program. To be eligible the candidate must be enrolled in full-time studies, with a course load of 24 credits over two consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). He/she must have a minimum average of 70% on previous years study at Algoma University. This award is non-renewable.

The Sault Ste. Marie Professional Fire Fighters, Local 529 Social Work Bursary will be used annually to provide a $500 bursary to a student in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of studies in the Social Work program. To be eligible the candidate must be enrolled in full-time studies, with a course load of 24 credits over two consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). He/she must have a minimum average of 70% on previous years study at Algoma University. This award is non-renewable.

The Sault Ste. Marie Zonta Foundation Student Award will provide a $500 bursary award to a female student who is in her 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of full-time studies and who has demonstrated financial need.  Priority will be given to a female student who in the past year has demonstrated service and/or advocacy on behalf of women through their involvement in campus activities and/or clubs. This award is non-renewable.

Thanks to a generous donation from Scotiabank Canada, this fund provides awards annually to Anishinaabe (First Nation, Métis, or Inuit) students enrolled in full-time studies in the Business Administration Program. Candidates must have a minimum average of 70% and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students Association Student Award is an endowed bursary fund of the Algoma University Foundation and will provide one award of up to $1,000 to an Anishinaabe (First Nation, Métis, or Inuit) student in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Steelworkers 2251 Student Award, Established by John Kallio will provide financial assistance to a student who is a child or grandchild of a member of United Steelworkers Local 2251, who is in good academic standing and has demonstrated financial need. In the event that an eligible student is not available, the award shall be given to a graduate of a Sault Ste. Marie secondary school, who is in good academic standing and has demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students Association Bursary will provide two awards of $500 each to Anishinaabe, First Nation, Métis, or Inuit students in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of full-time studies at Algoma University in any program of study. The recipients must be in good academic standing, have a demonstrated financial need and have been actively involved in their community. This award is non-renewable.

The Students Helping Students Bursary will provide awards of $500 each to students in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of study in any program. To be eligible, candidates will be studying on a part-time basis, carrying a course load of 20% – 70% of a full course load over two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study. He/she must present a minimum average of 70% and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Supporting Science & Technology Bursary will provide award(s) up to $500 each to student(s) in their 3rd year of study in a Science related program. To be eligible, the candidates must be enrolled in and maintain 30 credits over two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study. The candidates must maintain a minimum average of 70% and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Black Opportunities Bursary will be used annually to provide an award, valued at $500, to help black Canadian or International students who are contributing to our society through the power of education. This award will be used to help any black descent/African descent/Carribean descent student, studying in any program at Algoma University. To be eligible the student must have a demonstrated financial need, and be enrolled in full-time studies, with a course load of 24 credits over two consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). This award is non-renewable.

The Boreal Scholarship provides two $1,000 awards to students in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of studies at Algoma University in either the Environmental Science or Biology program. The candidate must be enrolled in full-time basis, with a course load of 24 credits over two consecutive terms (winter/fall). He/she must have a minimum average of 70% or higher in their last year of study. Preference will be given to First Nations, Metis or Inuit students. This award is non-renewable.

The Charlie Hunter bursaries provide an award of $500 to a First Nation, Metis or Inuit student, in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of study in any program. To be eligible, the candidate must be a full-time student, carrying a course load of 24 credits over two consecutive terms (winter/fall). The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need, be in good academic standing and must be an active volunteer. This award is non-renewable.

The Elvi & Lloyd Leitch Continuing Bursary will be used to provide one bursary for a student in their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of study in the Music Program. To be eligible the candidate must be enrolled in full-time studies, with a course load of 30 credits over two consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). He/she must have a minimum average of 70% on previous years study at Algoma University and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.

The Henry Lang, Q.C. & Mrs. Helen Lang Law & Justice Bursary will provide a $1,000 bursary to a student in the Law and Justice Program who is in their 3rd or 4th year of full-time studies, is in good academic standing and who has a demonstrated financial need. If no such student qualifies for the award in any academic year, the award may be given to a student with a demonstrated financial need, in good academic standing and in full-time studies in the Business Administration Program. This award is non-renewable.

The Hollingsworth Family Bursaries provide an award of $1,000 to students, in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of study in Business or Economics program. To be eligible, the candidate must be a full-time student, carrying a course load of 24 credits over two consecutive terms (winter/fall). The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need and have a minimum average of 70%.

A fund established in memory of the late Peter McGregor provides an annual award of $250 to be awarded to a first or second year student enrolled in at least one 6-credit Social Welfare course. The recipient must have demonstrated financial need, be in good academic standing and demonstrate a record of service to the community.

The Tracy E. Cresswell Bursary provides a bursary valued at a minimum of $500 to a 3rd or 4th year student majoring in the Law & Justice Program.  The candidate must be enrolled in full-time studies in their 3rd or 4th year and demonstrate an unmet financial need. The candidate must also be planning on continuing their education at either an accredited Law School or Graduate Studies program.  This award is non-renewable.

The Tim Hortons/Moringstar  Bursary provides an award of $500 to students, in their 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of study in any program. To be eligible, the candidate must be a full-time student, carrying a course load of 24 credits over two consecutive terms (winter/fall). The recipient must have a demonstrated financial need.

The Tulloch Engineering Student Award will provide financial assistance to a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student who is studying in the field of Math or Science, is in good academic standing and has demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable.
