(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – April 25, 2016): The Sault Ste. Marie Science Festival – the only festival of its kind in the area – kicks off Tuesday, April 26, and runs through to April 30, 2016.  The Sault Ste. Marie Science Festival will shine the spotlight on science and research happening right here in your community. It will also spark an interest in science among children, teens and adults by offering an opportunity to celebrate science in a fun and welcoming setting for all ages.

Getting people to participate and enjoy science at all ages is a great way to promote innovation and encourage younger generations to go into science related fields.”

“The inaugural Sault Ste. Marie Science Festival in 2015 was a huge success, and I’m pleased that it’s returning for a second year,” said David Orazietti, MPP Sault Ste. Marie. “The week-long festival aims to spark a child’s interest in science from a young age, and is extremely successful in doing so through family events and hands-on activities. By highlighting the scientific initiatives taking place here in the Sault, youth are encouraged to consider the possibilities of a science-related career.”

Marie. “I’d like to thank the many community partners who have collaborated to make the event happen. I’m looking forward to the festival and to learning more about the scientific research, initiatives and technologies that local scientists are working on in our community.”

The week long event highlights science and technology through several activities including:

• Science For Seniors – April 26 and 27, 2016

Older adults will engage in science through interactive science demos presented in select seniors’ centres. The presentations will include insect exhibits presented by Entomica, with hands-on displays of live insects and some of the world’s most beautiful bugs. Older adults will experience the exotic world of insects along with the opportunity to hold these wondrous creatures, and interact with real scientists eager to share their passion and expertise in the field.

• ARTIE (Advanced Research and Technology Innovation Expo) – April 28, 2016 – The TECH

This annual event offered by the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre to elementary school students from Grade 1 to Grade 8. Students will participate in hands-on activities, demonstrations and presentations featuring a wide variety of local science exhibitors from fields including biology, environmental sciences, computer sciences, robotics and technology, and so much more.

• Hangar After Dark: Shaken & Stirred (19+) – April 29, 2016, 7 pm – 11 pm- Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre

The name’s Dark. After Dark. Join us to sip some martinis — shaken, not stirred. Test your spy skills in our Nerf shooting range. Outwit opponents in Bond Jeopardy and try your luck at Casino Royale. Listen to the soothing sound of Jay Case & Frank Deresti and see some gadgets and gizmos the likes of which Q would be proud. We’d tell you more – but it’s classified.

This event is specifically designed for adults to experience an intellectual evening out, exploring and interacting with science exhibits in a relaxed and social setting. This themed event includes engaging guest presenters, live science demos, workshops and hands-on activities, as well as live music and drinks and hors d’oeuvres for purchase.

Admission: $15 per person (taxes extra)

• Science Carnival – April 30, 2016 11 am – 4 pm – The Machine Shop at Millsquare

This one day community event provides families with the opportunity to participate in engaging, and fun science and technology activities, visit with well over 20 exhibitors showcasing presentations, labs and attractions, all using local and global science concepts and engineering principals. Also enjoy live science shows and entertainment featuring Imaginez Ensemblez for a festive event!

Admission: $2 per person or $10 per family

The Sault Ste. Marie Science Festival is presented by Sault Ste. Marie science, technology, cultural, and educational institutions, in collaboration with Science North Science North. The group of partners also includes Algoma University, Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, Entomica, Invasive Species Centre, Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service, Sault College, Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The Festival is sponsored by CTV, 104.3 Country and KiSS 100.5.
