Specializations
You can customize your degree to include something you love! Students enrolled in the four-year Bachelor of Computer Science (BCosc) program can further enhance the quality of their degree by specializing in one of the four areas: computer game technology; Data Science and AI; mobile software engineering; or XR Technologies.
In the computer game technology specialization, students will apply their foundational programming knowledge to the design and development of video game software. The program focuses on a complete overview of game development, from the initial code to the finished product, with courses covering computer graphics, the games marketplace, game artificial intelligence, and gameplay design. Students will develop skills in the analysis, design, programming, and testing of computer consoles, mobiles, PC, and hand-held video games. Graduates of this specialization often use their gaming projects courses to develop a sophisticated portfolio that can be used when seeking employment.
The Data Science and AI specialization provides students with the knowledge and technical skills needed to analyze complex datasets and develop intelligent systems. The curriculum integrates foundational computer science principles with advanced topics such as deep learning, machine learning, data mining, and artificial intelligence. Students will gain experience with modern data science tools, programming languages, and frameworks used in industry and research. Graduates of this specialization will be equipped to work in diverse fields, including healthcare, finance, business analytics, and technology, where data-driven decision-making is crucial. The program also emphasizes hands-on learning through projects, allowing students to build a portfolio that highlights their expertise in data science and AI.
The Mobile Software Engineering specialization enables the student to apply the foundation skills of Computer Science to the development of applications and systems that implement the use of mobile devices in modern computer systems. This allows them to develop expertise in what is becoming a predominant part of the application of computer technology. The students will study the range of applications of mobile devices and will learn to develop applications on a variety of mobile platforms. The graduate will be able to apply the use of mobile devices in business, industry, social media and gaming. The specialization requires the student to do at least one major project that can form the basis for a portfolio of skills as they seek employment in the industry.
The XR (Extended Reality) Specialization within the Bachelor of Computer Science program equips students with hands-on skills in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). Students will learn to design immersive user experiences, work with XR hardware, and manage full XR development workflows. This interdisciplinary training prepares graduates for emerging careers in immersive technologies across industries like gaming, healthcare, and education. The specialization also offers flexibility, allowing seamless transitions to or from the regular Computer Science stream.

Areas of Expertise: Dr. George Townsend is the most senior faculty member in the School of Computer Science and Technology at Algoma University, where he has served for nearly 40 years. An expert in Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), Dr. Townsend was recognized as one of the top ten BCI researchers internationally at the 2010 Annual International BCI Meeting. His research contributions include collaborative work with the Wadsworth Research Center in Albany, New York, where he advanced their BCI system enabling paralyzed patients to control a computer solely through thought. Dr. Townsend is currently working with the BCI lab at East Tennessee State University on a novel brain-signal-based authentication system aimed at replacing traditional usernames and passwords with secure, brainwave-based login methods.

Prof. Sathaporn “Hubert” Hu is a professor in extended reality (XR). Currently, he is working in immersive analytics, which involves using XR to make data more understandable. However, he is currently recalibrating his research direction towards making XR experiences more universal and social.
This involves designing software that allows computing devices to be used like XR devices and developing AI tools to reconcile XR input data from multiple sources. He is also interested in engaging with communities to see how XR solutions could be best incorporated for their situations. He also holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo and a Master’s degree in Computer Information Systems from DePaul University. Dr. Wei received an MBA in International Management and an MA in World Heritage Studies from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Brandenburg University of Technology in 2002. After receiving his PhD from the Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick in 2006 on EU-Asia Economic Relations, he then became a postdoctoral visiting fellow at the Ivey Business School of Western Ontario. Subsequently, he joined MacEwan University School of Business, and was promoted to Professor in 2017.
While at MacEwan, Dr. Wei served as Associate Dean (Research and International) for five years and more recently as Department Chair since 2021.He is a holder of ICD.D (Institute of Corporate Directors Director Designation) and served on the board for four international and two provincial organizations, and as President of the Edmonton chapter of the Hong Kong – Canada Business Association. Dr. Wei has taught a wide range of courses in international business, finance, intercultural communication and international studies. He developed and taught field seminars, established experiential learning opportunities for students, and developed a network of international collaborations. Dr. Wei is associate editor of two Emerald academic journals and his research focuses on FDI (Foreign Direct Investments), emerging markets, emerging market multinational and business case studies. His research success is impressive – he published 153 peer reviewed journal articles, books, book chapters, conference papers, presentations and business cases; received 35 internal and external research grants; co-organized 31 international business conferences, workshops and competitions; and supervised 18 undergraduate student projects and 12 PhD and Visiting Scholars.
At MacEwan University, Dr. Wei also developed a research institute on Asia Pacific Business and played an instrumental role in MacEwan’s EFMD accreditation and the development and implementation of the first research strategy that brought about increased research output. These included a Business Undergraduate Research Participation Pool, and an Indigenous Research Forum, which was a cooperation between the Kihêw Waciston Indigenous Centre at MacEwan University and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business. He also initiated a case publishing agreement with Ivey Publishing, the only partnership world-wide between an undergraduate business school and Ivey. Some of the game-changing contributions to the MacEwan School of Business include the initiative of a Canada Research Chair and the Alberta Innovates funding for Venture Lab.
Dr. Wei states, “My international experience in higher education, dedication to student learning and scholarship, and commitment to truth, healing and reconciliation are hallmarks of my personal character and professional aspirations.” He has established strong international and Indigenous relationships, has led fundraising events, and is passionate about his research and the success of students and colleagues.

Dr. Nusrate Aziz is a Full Professor of Finance and Economics in the Department of Finance, Economics, and Decision Sciences, under the Faculty of Business and Professional Studies. With over 25 years of experience in academia, research, and consultancy, Dr. Aziz has made significant contributions to his field. He is recognized as a Fellow of the Global Labor Organization (GLO) and holds memberships with esteemed organizations such as the International Migration Research Centre (IMRC) and the NORDIK Institute. Additionally, he was a Visiting Researcher and has been serving as an Adjunct Faculty at Thompson Rivers University.
Dr. Aziz has a rich academic background, having held positions at renowned institutions including the University of Bath, University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, Multimedia University, and University of Chittagong. His research prowess is evident through numerous publications in prestigious journals such as the International Review of Financial Analysis, International Review of Economics and Finance, European Journal of Political Economy, The World Economy, and Applied Economics. His work has garnered over 665 citations on Google Scholar, reflecting its impact and significance in the academic community.
Dr. Aziz has successfully secured funding for his research projects from various sources, including recent grants such as the SSHRC Insight Development Grant, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Mitacs Globallink Research Internship (GRI) program, and the SSHRC Institutional Grant, among others. As the principal consultant, Dr. Aziz has led projects funded by organizations such as DFID (UK), AusAid (Australia), and technical support provided by the Government of Bangladesh, demonstrating his expertise in applying research to real-world challenges. He also contributed as a Research Associate for the Job Market Need Assessment for Newcomers and Refugees project for the Ontario Centre for Workforce Innovation.
In his current role, Dr. Aziz imparts knowledge to students through courses in Financial Management, Corporate Finance, Macroeconomics, International Trade, and International Finance.
His research interests include International Finance, International Trade, Labour Migration, Climate Action, and Monetary Economics. His technical skills encompass Time Series, Hierarchical and Panel Data estimation, Discrete Choice Models, Factor Analysis, and Structural Equation Modelling. His proficiency in data analysis and econometrics is also demonstrated by his skill in using a range of statistical software, including STATA, Eviews, NLOGIT, PcGive, OxMetrics, GRETL, SPSS, and SmartPLS.

Ahmed Aziz is currently a Assistant Professor in the School of Business and Economics at Algoma University. He has a Ph.D. in Economics at Iowa State University and received his M.A. from Rutgers University. Prior to joining the Algoma faculty, he was an NOHFC Fellow at Algoma University and has also served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. His current research projects focus on the impact of Canadian interprovincial migration on interprovincial trade. His areas of expertise include labour, international, and development economics and the intersection between these fields. Assistant Professor
Shobeir Amirnequiee is an Assistant Professor of Business Analytics at Algoma University, working at the intersection of operations management and operations research. He earned his PhD in Management Science from Ivey Business School at Western University. His research examines how firms should make sourcing, pricing, and channel decisions when upstream partners can become strategic competitors, while also studying how organizations can learn consumer preferences and segment markets in data-constrained settings. Methodologically, he combines game-theoretic models with optimization and data-driven modeling, including methods of machine learning and econometrics. His work appears in outlets including European Journal of Operational Research and Omega.
