External Awards
The external awards, bursaries, and scholarships, listed below, are available to students beyond the scholarships and bursaries Algoma University offers. They are provided and administered through external government, corporate, or community organizations.
Instant Record Check Scholarship
Instant Record Check, an online provider of RCMP criminal record checks in Canada is pleased to offer a $1,000 Scholarship to one lucky student.
The applicant must write a 300-word essay on either of the following topics:

The relationship between a person’s criminal history and their credibility
-
The convenience and threats technology has posed to one’s personal information
-
Your stand on employers doing criminal background checks on applicants
-
How the COVID-19 pandemic affected employment chances and the hiring process
Essays must be sent to [email protected] as an attached Word document file, along with the applicant’s full name, address, phone number, school name, and date of birth. Use “Instant Record Check $1000 Scholarship | Full Name” as the attachment file name and subject line.

The Métis Nation of Ontario
The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Métis Student Bursary Program provides bursaries to registered students who are verified Métis citizens of the Métis Nation of Ontario. Applicants will be required to consent to a citizenship verification check to confirm eligibility for these awards. Rhodes Scholarships
Rhodes Scholarships will be hosting an informational webinar about the Rhodes Scholarships for Canada this spring. The webinar will include an overview of the Rhodes Scholarship, the annual application process, and an opportunity to ask questions directly to the recent Canadian Rhodes Scholars. The session is taking place on March 7, at 3 pm EST and students interested in attending can register here.
The Royal Canadian Legion, Ontario Provincial Command Bursary
This bursary is available to:
- Ex-Service personnel or currently serving members of The Canadian Forces(Regular, Reserve, and Merchant Navy) and their spouse, children and grandchildren
- Commonwealth war veterans and their spouse, children and grandchildren
- Ordinary and Life members of The Royal Canadian Legion and their spouse, children and grandchildren
- Associate members of The Royal Canadian Legion and their children only
- Ladies’ Auxiliary members and their children and grandchildren
- Stepchildren and step grandchildren may be considered where applicable.

In honour of these three people, who exemplify the steelworkers’ spirit and dedication to help others, Local Union 2251 will be offering ten (10) $1,000.00 scholarships to children (including stepchildren and grandchildren) of Local 2251 active, deceased or retired members. If there are, at any point, insufficient qualified scholarship applicants from within the Local 2251 recipients, the scholarship may be awarded to the children or grandchildren of any Essar Steel Algoma Inc. employee, or failing that, any resident of Sault Ste. Marie and District.

Women, aged 16-19 on 1 April each year, studying at a secondary school, college or university in a Zonta district/region, or who are studying elsewhere but are citizens of a Zonta country, who demonstrate evidence of the following, are eligible to apply.
– Studying at secondary school, college, or university
– Active commitment to volunteerism.
– Experience in local government, student government, or workplace leadership (paid or unpaid).
– Volunteer leadership achievements.
– Knowledge of Zonta International and its programs.
– Support in Zonta International’s mission of empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.
