Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Teaching and Learning

As the use of generative AI tools continues to grow in higher education, instructors at Algoma University are encouraged to reflect carefully on how these tools are used in their teaching practices and classroom environments.

To support this, the Teaching and Learning and Technical Support Committee has prepared official guidelines that outline key principles, ethical considerations, and recommended practices related to generative AI in instruction and assessment. These guidelines were approved by the Algoma University Senate on May 2, 2025.

These guidelines address important topics, including:

  • When and how generative AI can be used in course design and teaching
  • What instructors should communicate to students about AI use in their courses
  • How AI relates to academic integrity and the university’s policy on misconduct
  • Ethical and privacy concerns when using AI tools in assessments or feedback
  • Recommendations for transparent and responsible AI use by both faculty and students

Whether you prohibit the use of AI in your classroom or integrate it into your teaching, this resource will help you make informed, policy-aligned decisions that protect student learning and uphold academic standards.
