Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Welcome to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, home to innovative and interdisciplinary teaching and research across the creative arts, humanities, and social sciences.

As a student in one or more of our programs—Anishinaabemowin, Anishinaabe Studies, English, French, History, Law and Justice, Music, Political Science, Social Work, Visual Art—you will explore the evolution of human knowledge and societies, how we got to where we are – and where we might be going. You will engage with thought-provoking subject matter and learn how to critically analyze the complex narratives that shape humanity. You will increase your understanding of different cultures, literatures, languages, and ways of knowing, as well of the ideas, events, social structures, and processes that have shaped individuals and societies in the past and continue to do so today. You will learn about the world, and about yourself and your place in the world.

You will be encouraged to explore your ideas and passions, to learn to question, and to develop strong analytical reasoning, problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, and creative skills. You will hone your ability to lead change and to respond from a variety of perspectives to the complex and challenging issues facing our society. In short, you will acquire the skills and knowledge that are highly sought after in a broad range of professional, academic, cultural, social service, and business careers—and that will empower you to live a meaningful life and make a difference.
