For this reason, our business administration students are constantly interacting with business professionals and institutions in Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding Algoma region. Students work with and alongside businesses, developing business plans and strategies to improve on production, effectiveness, and efficiency. Champion the Northern Ontario Business Case Competition
Each April, fourth year students have the opportunity to show off their knowledge and expertise at the annual Northern Ontario Business Case Competition. Our students go head-to-head against other Northern Ontario BBA students in pursuit of the Business Case Competition Award, and are judged by regional professionals and business celebrities.

Dr. Jo-Anne Ryan obtained her Chartered Accountant (CA) Designation in 1991 and articled with KPMG LLP and subsequently received her Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Designation. Shortly after leaving public accounting to pursue an academic career at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, Dr. Ryan began PhD studies at the University of Birmingham, UK. In 2011, Dr. Ryan completed her PhD in accounting at the University of Birmingham. Her thesis employed a case study approach to explore the rules and routines that have evolved within the Investor Relations (IR) functions of a large Canadian public company from the inception of their IR website in 1997 to 2010 utilizing weblog analysis and an institutional framework. Dr. Ryan also holds a Data Management Certificate from the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada.
Dr. Ryan has served as an accounting professor and Department Chair at several universities including Nipissing, Lakehead University, Laurentian University and Algoma University where she is currently service as Department Chair. She teaches a variety of accounting and auditing courses at all levels. She has a strong interest in accounting education and preparing accounting students who wish to pursue their CPA designations upon graduation. Her students have prepared, and delivered, education seminars to the local business community.
Dr. Ryan has served as President on her local CA Board and as a volunteer board member on several not-for-profit organizations. She has delivered financial literacy courses developed by CPA Canada to her local community and has spoken at Rotary Club events. She taught at the School of Accountancy held annually at York University and continues to work with both CPA Ontario and CPA Canada as a team lead, standard setter, and case writer.
Dr. Ryan has published articles in peer reviewed journals that focus on accounting unification and assurance case. She is co-author of Financial Accounting Cases (Wiley Publishing) that is now in its third edition and continues to write cases for both publication and classroom use. She is a reviewer for Accounting Perspectives. Dr. Ryan has a strong classroom and research interest in emerging technologies including data analytics.

Dr. Jody-Lynn Rebek is Assistant Professor at Algoma University (Sault Ste. Marie, ON), and principal at Vive Strategies Consulting. As a Leadership and Management consultant, Jody-Lynn leads transformation efforts that renew focus, positive growth and results-oriented action plans for individuals, organizations, such as the Natural Resources Canada, Ministry of Natural Resources, and Canadian Bank Note. With a Ph.D. in Educational Studies in Leadership and Policy (Lakehead University), Jody continues to conduct leadership development research. She was awarded the Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to complete her Masters of Arts degree in Leadership and Training (Royal Roads University, Victoria, BC). Some of her recent accolades include inaugural winner of the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference 2020, Algoma Alumni Achievement Award, the Athena Award, and the Innovative Educator of the Year award.

Dr. Nusrate Aziz is a Full Professor of Finance and Economics in the Department of Finance, Economics, and Decision Sciences, under the Faculty of Business and Economics. With over 25 years of experience in academia, research, and consultancy, Dr. Aziz has made significant contributions to his field. He is recognized as a Fellow of the Global Labor Organization (GLO) and holds memberships with esteemed organizations such as the International Migration Research Centre (IMRC) and the NORDIK Institute. Additionally, he was a Visiting Researcher and has been serving as an Adjunct Faculty at Thompson Rivers University.
Dr. Aziz has a rich academic background, having held positions at renowned institutions including the University of Bath, University of Birmingham, University of Nottingham, Multimedia University, and University of Chittagong. His research prowess is evident through numerous publications in prestigious journals such as the International Review of Financial Analysis, International Review of Economics and Finance, European Journal of Political Economy, The World Economy, and Applied Economics. His work has garnered over 665 citations on Google Scholar, reflecting its impact and significance in the academic community.
Dr. Aziz has successfully secured funding for his research projects from various sources, including recent grants such as the SSHRC Insight Development Grant, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Mitacs Globallink Research Internship (GRI) program, and the SSHRC Institutional Grant, among others. As the principal consultant, Dr. Aziz has led projects funded by organizations such as DFID (UK), AusAid (Australia), and technical support provided by the Government of Bangladesh, demonstrating his expertise in applying research to real-world challenges. He also contributed as a Research Associate for the Job Market Need Assessment for Newcomers and Refugees project for the Ontario Centre for Workforce Innovation.
In his current role, Dr. Aziz imparts knowledge to students through courses in Financial Management, Corporate Finance, Macroeconomics, International Trade, and International Finance.
His research interests include International Finance, International Trade, Labour Migration, Climate Action, and Monetary Economics. His technical skills encompass Time Series, Hierarchical and Panel Data estimation, Discrete Choice Models, Factor Analysis, and Structural Equation Modelling. His proficiency in data analysis and econometrics is also demonstrated by his skill in using a range of statistical software, including STATA, Eviews, NLOGIT, PcGive, OxMetrics, GRETL, SPSS, and SmartPLS.
Taslima Nasreen (Ph.D., MFAc, CMA)

Dr. Nasreen will be joining Algoma University as a tenure track Assistant Professor, Accounting on August 1, 2024.
Dr. Nasreen’s research is apprised by various interdisciplinary, interpretative, critical accounting approaches and sustainability awareness. She utilizes an institutionalist’s perspective and interpretative methodology to examine accounting practices within societal contexts. Her passion lies in exploring the role of accounting in integrating sustainability into organizational and industry practices. Dr. Nasreen has recently achieved a strong track record in interdisciplinary accounting-focused research, with four published articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Managerial Auditing Journal (A-ranked), the Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting (B-ranked), the Journal of Financial Reporting and Accounting (C-ranked), and the Copernican Journal of Finance and Accounting (C-ranked). Additionally, in 2018, she received the ‘Best Student Paper’ award at the ASAC conference for her high-quality research output. In 2021, She also contributed to a European Commission project on ESG Disclosure Measures across IPSF jurisdiction, as an assistant of the jurisdiction expert (Prof. Cho, Schulich Business School).
Dr. Nasreen demonstrates and cultivates strong critical thinking skills and enthusiasm by exhibiting a sincere interest in students’ development, understanding their goals, unique situations, and capabilities, and holding high academic standards. Her pedagogical innovation is reflected in her semi-flipped and dialogical teaching methods. She engages her students in learning and relating to the real business world by offering case analysis, simulated problem-solving, and critical reflections writing. As a researcher and innovative educator, Dr. Nasreen joined York University in 2013 as an adjunct faculty of the School of Administrative Studies (SAS). Her teaching passion was recently rewarded by the School of Administrative Studies. She was the recipient of the Director’s Recognition for Teaching Excellence for the last three consecutive years: 2022, 2021, and 2020. She teaches intro, intermediate, and advanced level courses in both financial and managerial accounting at the undergraduate level. At the graduate level, Dr. Nasreen works as in-charge of the internship program of the Masters of Financial Accountability (MFAc).
In 2022-23, Dr. Nasreen served as Contract Faculty Representative at the Faculty Council of Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at York University. She also acted as a member of the Accounting Faculty (tenure-track position) search and hiring committee in 2019/2020 of Department of Management at University of Guelph.
Dr. Nasreen previously served as a part-time faculty member at the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph and at Sheridan College. She holds a BBA and an MBA from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. In 2010, she immigrated to Canada and obtained a Masters of Financial Accountability (MFAc) from York University. She later earned a Ph.D. in Management with a concentration in Accounting and Sustainability from the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph.

Omar Abou Kasm is an Assistant Professor of Decision Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Transportation Planning and Engineering from New York University, and his main research focus is on logistics optimization. His teaching interests revolve around Quantitative Methods, Management Science, and Probability & Statistics subjects. Finally, prior to joining Algoma University, Omar worked in teaching and research at multiple institutions and worked in logistics management for project-based supply chains.
