National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – SSM
The agenda below outlines how Algoma University will honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR) across our Sault Ste. Marie campus. This day is an important time to reflect, learn, and stand in solidarity with Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities. We look forward to joining together in commemoration and learning.

10 a.m. Opening Ceremony (Algoma University, Front Loop)
- Welcome & Land Acknowledgement
- Flag Raising Ceremony: D’lyla Trudeau, Presentation of the Student Art Flag
- Opening Remarks – Dr. Sheila Embleton, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor, Martin Bayer, Vice President, Nyaagaaniid – Anishinaabe Initiatives, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, SASA Representative
10:30 a.m. Guest Speaker (Shirley Horn – Residential School Survivor)
- Reflections and Story Sharing
- Moment of Silence
11:00 a.m. Truth Walk Tour (Morning Session)
- Guided walk led by Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre (SRSC) staff through key historical sites on campus, including the Chapel, Principal’s Residence, Cemetery and Shingwauk Hall (including the Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall Exhibit)
12 – 4 p.m. Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall Exhibit Opens to the Public
- Self-guided tours are available throughout the day, with staff on-site for questions and support
12 p.m. Healing Social & Orange Shirt Pin Making (NW 201 – The Nest)
- Drop-in OPEN from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
- Pin-making for reflection and creativity
- Light refreshments available
1 p.m. Virtual Truth Walk Tour
1:30 p.m. Truth Walk Tour (Afternoon Session)
- Second guided walk for those unable to attend the morning session
7 p.m. Candlelight Vigil (Front Loop – Shingwauk Hall)
- Gathering to honour Survivors and those lost
- Community reflection and closing remarks
- Candle distribution and lighting ceremony
Resources
10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Fire Arbour
- Elder Mike Hodgson will be in the arbour with a fire from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 29, People & Culture
- Resource sharing station outside of Wishart Library. P&C staff to hand out pamphlets and information cards (with QR Code) to raise awareness and understanding of NDTR/Orange Shirt Day, and encourage staff/students to participate in the next day’s events/honour the day.
9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 30, People & Culture
- Resource sharing station outside of Wishart Library
- 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Information tabling and handouts outside of Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall Exhibit

Phyllis Webstad’s new book will be available for purchase and can be won via an on-site drawing. Phyllis is a Northern Secwepemc author and activist from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, and the creator of Orange Shirt Day. She is an advocate and Survivor of the Residential School System.
