(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – May 15, 2017): An Algoma University music student has claimed top honours at the 2017 Sault Ste. Marie Festival Competition, held at St. Luke’s Cathedral. Cathryn Franklin tied for first with Jackson Allen for the prestigious Shield Competition Award.

“It is an honour and fine accomplishment for Cathryn to be awarded the Shield from the Sault Ste. Marie Music Festival,” said Dr. Edward Turgeon, Chair of the Department of Music and Visual Arts. “The Sault Ste. Marie Music Festival represents an opportunity for young artists to flex their performance skills in front of expert judges and appreciative audiences. Ultimately, a Shield victory is a tremendous vote of confidence that will serve to inspire and motivate Ms. Franklin as she reaches for new levels of artistry and communication.”

From Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and a graduate of Superior Heights Collegiate and Vocational School, Franklin has had an interest in music since she was five years old. Franklin began studies with the Algoma Conservatory of Music at age five, beginning with music readiness classes, private piano classes, and later flute lessons. She has been playing flute for six years and currently plays at a Grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) level. Franklin is enrolled in Algoma U’s Bachelor of Arts in Music program, with specializations in piano and flute.

Franklin performed two solo pieces to earn the title, including “Ständchen” by Franz Schubert and “La Notte Concerto” by Antonio Vivaldi.

Franklin also earned first place in the Senior Woodwinds category.

Upon graduation from Algoma U in 2018, Franklin is interested in either pursuing graduate studies or a teaching designation in music.

“This award is the highest achievement in the city for performance,” said Franklin. “This award allows me to recognize the hard work and dedication I have put into my music from when it was just an extra circular activity to it being my degree.”
