Algoma U Welcomes New Academic Dean

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – January 8, 2018): Algoma University is pleased to announce the appointment of  Dr. Donna Rogers as the new Academic Dean, effective February 1, 2018.

Dr. Rogers possesses extensive university leadership and management experience, most recently from Brescia University College, an affiliate of Western University in London, Ontario, where she served as Vice-Principal and Academic Dean since 2013. She also served as Interim Principal from 2015-16.

“We feel very fortunate to have Dr. Rogers joining the senior leadership team at Algoma University,” said President and Vice Chancellor, Asima Vezina. “Donna is a proven leader and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience in higher education teaching, research, and leadership. Her student-centred, inclusive, and collaborative leadership approach will fit well with the Algoma University community.”

Aside from her tenure at Brescia University College, Rogers has also held positions at Pennsylvania State University, Middlebury College, and Dalhousie University. Rogers earned her doctorate in Hispanic Languages and Literature from the University of Toronto. She earned her Master of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature from Western University and her Honours Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latin from the University of Waterloo.

“Algoma has such a bright future as a leader in the small-university student experience,” said Rogers. “Algoma is a shining example of a post-secondary institution that is engaged with Indigenous communities and with the local communities more broadly. Through the hiring process, I have been struck by the talent and strengths of the faculty and the genuine care and concern they have for their students – and those students are names and faces at Algoma, not just numbers. I’m excited about working with my new colleagues and ensuring that Algoma continues to offer excellent, relevant, and sustainable academic programs.”

Rogers succeeds Dr. Richard McCutcheon, who served as Academic Dean from January 2015 – December 2017.
