Algoma University Students Raise $4,000 for Grace Court Seniors Home

Algoma University students from the Faculty of Business and Economics have raised $4,000 to date to support upgrades at Grace Court, a seniors’ residence in Brampton. The funds were generated through Pitching for Hope, a student-led cricket fundraiser that drew strong community participation.

Organized by students in Algoma U’s Managing Small Business Enterprises course, the goal of Pitching for Hope was to help Grace Court address urgent infrastructure needs and begin building an endowment fund to support the seniors home’s long-term sustainability. This includes safety improvements, updated alarm systems, repairs and replacement of aging air conditioning units, new accessible furniture, upgrades to essential medical equipment, and refreshed common areas designed to foster social connection and recreational programming for residents.

The fundraiser reflects Algoma University’s commitment to project-based, community-centered learning, empowering students to create meaningful change while strengthening partnerships with local organizations such as Grace Court.

Led by Professor Shahrukh Khan, students developed, marketed, and delivered the event from concept to execution, demonstrating leadership, entrepreneurial thinking, and a strong sense of social responsibility.

“From the moment we started planning Pitching for Hope, I could feel that this project had heart. Being part of the development process, from early ideas, design, and strategy to watching the event steadily take shape, has been both challenging and rewarding. It’s given me the chance to lead and contribute, and to be part of something that aims to have a real impact on the community. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to seeing it all come together on the 27th.”
