(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – February 10, 2026) Algoma University Varsity Wrestling delivered one of the strongest performances in program history, finishing fifth overall at the 2026 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Wrestling Championships.

The Thunderbirds earned three OUA Second Team All-Star selections, captured four medals, and demonstrated competitive depth across both the men’s and women’s divisions in a highly contested provincial field. 

First-year finance and economics student Brandon Carrillo claimed a silver medal in the 57 kg weight class. Second-year English student Becca Gutteridge captured silver at 59 kg, while fourth-year history student Lilah Fraser also earned silver in the 83 kg category. Additionally, third-year community, economic, and social development (CESD) student Rebecca Vann secured a bronze medal in the 50 kg division.

“This was an exceptional weekend for our program and a reflection of the work our athletes have put in all season,” said head coach Trevor Manchester. “Top to bottom, this was the best overall performance we have had since the program began.”

Carrillo, Gutteridge, and Fraser were also named OUA Second Team All Stars following their podium finishes. In addition to the medalists, multiple Thunderbirds posted strong placement matches, contributing valuable team points and securing qualification spots for nationals.

Algoma U now turns its focus toward the upcoming USports Wrestling Championships, where the program will be represented by one of its largest contingents to date, sending up to 10 athletes forward pending final wildcard selections.
