Algoma University’s Esports Tournament Promotes Emerging, In-demand Industries

Algoma University’s Department of Applied Business Studies and Executive Education (ABSEE) recently hosted its second Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Esports Tournament, underscoring the growing interest in esports and the University’s commitment to preparing students for emerging, in-demand industries.

Organized by students in the Introduction to Esports course, the tournament brought together competitors and spectators from across academic programs. As part of their experiential coursework, students managed the full scope of event planning, including registration, promotion, and live match operations, gaining practical skills that are directly transferable to careers in esports and digital media.

First-year student Hailey Curran earned the tournament championship title. Curran, who first connected with Algoma University through the recently sunsetted LEAP program, is now pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration with an Esports Specialization, reflecting Algoma U’s role in supporting students throughout their academic pathways.

“Competing in the Super Smash Bros. tournament was an unforgettable experience,” said Curran. “The support from the crowd pushed me through every match, especially in the finals, and it showcased how Algoma University and my program have helped me develop the skills, confidence, and competitive mindset to turn my passion for gaming into real opportunities.”

“As a university, we are proud to walk alongside students as they build the skills needed for today’s rapidly evolving industries,” said Dr. Brett Goodwin, Interim Vice-President, Academic and Research at Algoma University. “Esports continues to open doors for experiential learning, innovation, and community engagement, and events like this demonstrate the leadership and creativity our students bring to their studies and the communities we serve.”

The tournament further supported outreach for Algoma’s Esports Specialization, offering students a direct look at academic and career opportunities within the sector.
