Algoma University’s Game Incubator Demo Day Highlights the Success of the GameJam

Computer Science and Business students presented their game demos to industry professionals

Algoma University hosted its first Game Incubator Demo Day, a culmination of the hard work and dedication of students who began their game development journey during the inaugural Startup GameJam this past fall.

Five student game development teams showcased their completed game demos to a panel of industry judges, demonstrating the skills and entrepreneurial spirit they have cultivated. Since participating in the GameJam in September 2024, these Computer Science and Business students have dedicated over 60 hours to refining their technical expertise and building the foundation for successful game studios.

“Algoma University is setting a new standard for innovation and creativity by empowering students to turn their ideas into reality,” said Vinay Paramanand, Algoma University

Director, National Centre of Excellence for Immersive Technology. “The Game Incubator Demo Day reflects the University’s commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and technical expertise. By providing hands-on experiences and access to industry mentors, we are preparing students to excel in the competitive gaming industry and beyond.”

The winning teams were ‘Se7en’ placing first, and ‘GameGrp’ placing second. The teams received awards valued at $1000 and $500, respectively.

Each project was evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges composed of influential pillars of the gaming industry, including:

  • Matthew Persram, a corporate banker specializing in film, television production, digital media, and video game development;
  • Kim Gibson, representing Ontario Creates, a catalyst for economic development, investment and collaboration in Ontario’s creative industries;
  • Jason Lepine, founder of XP Gaming Inc. and host of Montréal International Game Summit (MIGS), the XP Game Summit, and various B2B initiatives for aspiring game developers.

The Demo Day also welcomed prominent figures from the Brampton community, including Jaipaul Massey-Singh, CEO of the Brampton Board of Trade, and Devin Ramphal, Innovation and Technology Sector Manager.

The Inaugural Game Incubator Demo Day marks an important milestone for Algoma University’s new game incubator, a vital component of the University’s National Centre of Excellence for Immersive Technology. This Centre aims to drive innovation by providing students the opportunity to learn from and work with industry experts and develop high-demand technical skills in the world of game design and immersive technology.
