Algoma University’s Queen Elizabeth Scholars Embark on Global Adventures

Algoma University is proud to announce the departure of its first cohort of Queen Elizabeth Scholars (QES) for 2025, who are set to embark on transformative global experiences to foster leadership, research, and community impact.

“We are incredibly proud of our Queen Elizabeth Scholars as they begin this exciting journey,” said Dawn White, Director of International Affairs at Algoma University. “These students exemplify leadership and a deep commitment to creating meaningful change locally and globally, and their work reflects Algoma University’s unique Special Mission of fostering cross-cultural understanding and community engagement. The continued support of the Queen Elizabeth Scholars Program reinforces Algoma’s deep commitment to global engagement and experiential learning.”

In Vietnam, fourth-year Computer Science student Abraham Ighalo is interning as a Data Engineer with a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) technology company. This project involves developing a recommendation system that enhances customer engagement while promoting fairness and equity in the suggestions. The aim is to build an artificial intelligence (AI) model that does not unfairly bias certain customer groups and provides a socially responsible engagement strategy sensitive to bias and equity, ensuring it does not disproportionately target or exclude marginalized groups.

In Costa Rica, fourth-year Business student Darius Bailey and fourth-year Social Work student Andrea Ryall will work with Impact Hub, a non-governmental organization (NGO) focused on climate action and the intersections of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Their project, Programa Raíces, is the first incubation program in Costa Rica dedicated to generating and consolidating sustainable tourism ventures in Indigenous territories. The students will support the organization of a sizeable Indigenous-led tourism fair in March 2025 and engage in community-based cultural activities and Spanish language learning. The QES program, in collaboration with the RHF, Universities Canada, and with support from Community Foundations of Canada, has played a crucial role in fostering community leaders and facilitating global experiences for students.
