When Paolo Bruni (BBA ’19) reflects on his time at Algoma University, he notes how deeply the institution shaped his career path. Paolo graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration, specializing in Human Resources and Marketing, alongside a co-op certificate of completion. Today, he channels that foundational experience into his role as a human resources business partner at Sault College.
During his undergraduate years, Paolo engaged with the Algoma University community far beyond the classroom. He built strong relationships within the business program and expanded his network by working in the Experiential Learning Program and the Advancement and Alumni office. These opportunities allowed him to connect with individuals outside his field of study and even launch his career as a human resources assistant right at the University. In this role, he gained vital foundational knowledge and built lasting professional relationships with faculty and staff.
Since graduating, Paolo has built a progressive career in his chosen field. After his initial role at Algoma University, he joined the Ontario Finnish Resthome Association as a Human Resources Officer. He spent two years there before moving to Algoma Steel, where he served as a Human Resources Business Partner for nearly three years. He continues to apply the practical skills and knowledge he acquired as a student to his current work at Sault College.
Paolo credits Algoma University with teaching him how to remain comfortable in uncomfortable settings. He highlights his fourth-year strategies class, taught by Associate Professor, Cathy Denomme, as a turning point that built his confidence in gathering and presenting information to leadership teams. The rigorous coursework and the competitive environment of the Northern Ontario Business Case Competition heavily shaped his current professional approach. He also notes that faculty members Dr. Aaron Gordon and Pelham Matthews made a significant impact on his development through their courses.
This academic foundation prepared Paolo for his proudest professional milestones since graduation: earning his Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) and Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designations. Both certifications demanded intense preparation, and he relied heavily on the study habits and tools he developed during his university years to succeed.
For current students who hope to follow a similar trajectory, Paolo strongly advocates for the co-op program. For him, the hands-on learning provided by co-op placements was crucial in confirming his passion for human resources. He believes the program allows students to develop professional networks and practical skills, ensuring they can hit the ground running immediately after graduation.
Paolo maintains a strong bond with the University by following Algoma University news and staying in touch with friends who work on campus. He remains incredibly proud of his alma mater and the ongoing connection he shares with the community.
