(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – January 28, 2016): Last night, the Algoma University Business Society (AUBS), in partnership with the Career Services Department, hosted the first annual Career Networking Night on campus, providing invaluable opportunities for students to network and meet potential employers from the region.
“This was a great event for our current students,” said Cindi Elgie, event organizer and Co-op and Career Services Advisor at the University. “This allowed our students to network and connect with successful alumni and hear their secret tips for success after graduation. It’s important that we utilize our alumni as mentors for students because they understand the struggles involved in entering the workforce and know firsthand what is needed to be successful in resume writing and interviewing in order to get a meaningful career.”
The one-hour event was sold out, and allowed students to listen to successful alumni share their experiences in the work world and provide tips for entering into the workforce after graduation. Alumni and employers gave short presentations before students had the opportunity to network individually over hors d’oeuvres. Students were expected to dress professionally in order to make a good first impression on potential employers. The event also allowed students to explore different career opportunities they may have not known about, including starting their own business.
The Career Networking event also enabled students to improve their communication skills, make new friends, and find inspiration for employment.
Business groups and employers in attendance included Strive: Young Professionals Group, YouLaunch, Century 21 Inc., Brookfield Renewable Energy Group, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Workiva, Agero, Sault Area Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, Skeggs Paciocco Lawyers, among others.
“I believe it is important for students to start networking while still in school, as this will benefit them when looking for jobs in the summer, and after graduation,” said Hannah Rowswell, an Algoma U student and President of AUBS. “Last night’s event accomplished this. It allowed several Algoma University alumni the chance to share their advice on success in the professional world, with students. The goal of the Algoma University Business Society is to create these types of networking opportunities, and other social events for all students at the post-secondary level in Sault Ste. Marie.”
Over 130 people attended the event, including current students, faculty, as well as high school students.
