Gathering at the Rapids Marks 20-Year Milestone Celebrating Culture, Community and Connection in Baawaating

Region’s largest pow-wow returns to GFL Memorial Gardens with record-breaking attendance

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON  – February 19, 2026) Algoma University proudly hosted the 20th Annual Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow: A Celebration of Lifelong Learning at the GFL Memorial Gardens over the weekend.

Building on momentum as a powerful space for community connection, cultural learning, and awareness across Baawaating, the two-day milestone celebration brought together a record-breaking 6,000+ attendees, participants and community members from across Turtle Island, and generated more than two truckloads of donations, totalling over 750 items collected in support of the Algoma University Students’ Union (AUSU) Food Pantry.

“The Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow is a space where tradition, education, culture and community come together with intention,” said Paul Sayers, Interim Director, Makwa Waakaai’gan, Algoma University. “Together, dancers, drummers, Knowledge Keepers, Elders, students, families, artisans, and community members have led us to this milestone, and it is our shared responsibility to continue these traditions grounded in Anishinaabe values. This work is made possible by the people who show up, support one another, and carry these teachings forward.”

Led by Algoma University’s Makwa Waakaa’igan, Anishinaabe Initiatives Division, and the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students’ Association (SASA), in partnership with the broader Anishinaabe community, this annual gathering is made possible through the dedication of volunteers, staff, sponsors, and community partners.

Miigwech to everyone who participated, supported, and contributed to this year’s Gathering at the Rapids Pow Wow.
