(SAULT STE MARIE, ON – February 4, 2026): On Friday, January 30, the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Algoma U Local Committee hosted its first Trivia Night at the Speakeasy, welcoming students for an evening of learning, connection and fun.
As a non-profit organization dedicated to creating positive educational and economic change for young people around the world, one of WUSC’s core initiatives is the Student Refugee Program. This unique global program combines refugee resettlement with access to post-secondary education. WUSC also works to raise awareness about global issues such as forced displacement, the refugee crisis, and gender inequality in higher education.
At Algoma University, the WUSC Local Committee supports this mission by helping create opportunities for students from around the world who are seeking both a university education and a new start in Canada.
The Trivia Night was designed to raise awareness about forcibly displaced individuals’ global migration challenges and the work WUSC carries out internationally and locally at Algoma U. Participants competed in teams answering questions that tested their knowledge of global issues as well as facts about the University.
Trivia questions highlighted topics such as global refugee trends, international education access, Algoma U’s Indigenous roots, its athletics programs and the diversity of its student population. Many attendees were surprised to learn about the global scale of displacement and the unique role Algoma U plays as a welcoming and diverse institution.
“More than 50 students attended the event, enjoying free pizza snacks and a lively atmosphere,” shared Annabelle Lefebvre, WUSC Local Committee Student Refugee Coordinator and a board member. “The committee would like to thank Harvest Algoma and the Algoma University Students’ Union (AUSU) Food Pantry for their generous support, which helped make the evening welcoming and accessible for all attendees. Participants also had the chance to win prizes and enjoy karaoke following the trivia portion of the night.”
The WUSC Algoma U Local Committee extends its sincere thanks to everyone who attended, volunteered and contributed to the success of the event. The committee looks forward to hosting more events throughout the year and continuing its work toward a more equitable and inclusive future. To learn more about WUSC, click here.
