People, Culture, and Passion: From Trinidad to Algoma U and Beyond

Meet Kernesha Baird, an Algoma University Alumni whose journey from Trinidad to Canada has been one of ambition, service, and strength. A proud graduate of the Bachelor of Business Administration program with a specialization in Accounting and Human Resources in 2015, she is now putting her skills to work supporting students and her community in impactful ways.

Drawn to Algoma University for its smaller class sizes and flexible evening schedules, Kernesha found not only an academic home but a welcoming and active community. “What I really appreciated was how personal the experience felt. It was easy to connect with professors and peers,” she says.

As a student, she volunteered at convocations, local farmers’ markets, and open houses—gaining valuable leadership experience and leaving her mark on the Algoma U community.

Today, Kernesha works as a People and Culture Specialist with the Mohawk Students’ Association, where she blends her passion for human resources with her professional designation as a Certified Payroll Leadership Professional. “We provide students and recent grads with job opportunities to help them gain experience before they enter the workforce,” she explains. “My role combines my HR background with my payroll certification to support our growing team.” She adds, “At the Mohawk Students’ Association, we empower students by delivering essential services that support their well-being, amplify their voices, and enrich their campus experience — from health care and transportation to vibrant events, advocacy, clubs, and nourishing food.”

With over 15 years of professional experience, Kernesha is also a devoted community leader. She serves on the Board of Directors at the Community Resource Centre (Brantford Food Bank) and Child and Family Services of Grand Erie, and is a past board member of the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Ontario. Always ready to give back, she is well known for her dedication to volunteerism and uplifting those around her.

Kernesha’s impressive academic achievements include not only her Honours BBA from Algoma University, but also a graduate certificate in Small Business Bookkeeping, an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration – Accounting, and an Executive Assistant certificate from Sheridan College.

A proud mother of three boys, Kernesha balances family life with a demanding career. She credits her passion for continuous growth and upliftment for keeping her organized, disciplined, and grounded in integrity.
