Rajat Malik came to Canada from Uttarakhand, India, with a strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering from Graphic Era University. In 2023, he completed his Graduate Certification in Project Management at Algoma University’s Brampton campus — a decision that would profoundly shape both his personal and professional journey.
What drew Rajat to Algoma was its distinctive culture of accessibility and connection. “What truly set Algoma apart was the opportunity for students to engage directly with senior leadership,” he recalls. He fondly remembers the guidance and insights he received, which helped him navigate challenges and embrace opportunities with confidence.
Rajat made the most of his time at Algoma, diving into both academic and community life. He served as a Student Ambassador and Orientation Leader, helping new students feel welcomed and supported. Beyond leadership roles, he embraced the rich experiences of campus life, from cultural trips to Sault Ste. Marie to the lively excitement of local baseball games. These moments, he says, were just as influential as his coursework, shaping his adaptability, communication skills, and sense of community.

Today, Rajat applies these lessons as a Community Engagement Specialist in the office of Councillor Rowena Santos for the City of Brampton. He develops and implements engagement strategies, manages resident casework, and builds meaningful connections between neighbourhood groups, seniors, and city departments. Reflecting on his journey, he says, “Algoma has become an irreplaceable piece of the puzzle in my life. It provided me with lasting friendships and a supportive environment that helped me find stability — and from there, it was up to me to grow.”
Outside of work, Rajat’s curiosity and love for exploration continue. He enjoys hiking, discovering new trails, trying diverse cuisines, exploring cafés, and learning about cultures — passions that mirror his ongoing commitment to community and connection.
