For Adella Turda, community has always been at the heart of everything she does. Originally from Caledon, Ontario, she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Community, Economic and Social Development (CESD) at Algoma University in 2016, an experience that helped shape both her career path and her approach to helping others.
What first drew her to Algoma U was a student bus tour to Sault Ste. Marie, where she got a firsthand look at the University’s close-knit environment and beautiful northern surroundings. “Algoma University offered smaller class sizes, which was nice because you’re not just a number,” she recalls. “The professors were excellent and genuinely cared about students’ success. I always felt supported by my classmates and teachers; it was a comfortable place where I could focus and grow.”
During her time on campus, Adella stayed active in student life, attending Algoma University Students’ Union (AUSU) events, running homework clubs, and making the most of the George Leach Centre (GLC) gym. These experiences, she says, helped her build confidence and balance, qualities that continue to guide her in her work today.
After graduating, she pursued a Diploma in Physiotherapy/Occupational Assistant in 2022, a natural extension of her interest in health and wellness. “It was easy to get into because of my BA from Algoma U,” she explains. “That education opened doors and gave me the foundation I needed to succeed.”
Today, she works full-time as a Therapy Assistant with SE Health while also running her own business, Turda Training, where she helps clients build strength, confidence, and sustainable habits. “I love working in the rehabilitative field because every day is something new,” she says.
“I get to help patients improve their mobility and strength while providing emotional support and encouragement. It’s gratifying to see people make progress, both physically and mentally.” Outside of work, Adella continues to live the values of connection and community.
She and her boyfriend, Jake, love attending local events, including Algoma U Alumni gatherings, where she enjoys reconnecting with old classmates. She’s also passionate about fitness, nature, and dogs, and makes time each year to participate in half marathons or obstacle courses to test her strength and endurance.
Reflecting on her journey, she credits Algoma University for giving her the tools and confidence to pursue her passions. “Algoma U gave me a great education and so many opportunities,” she says. “It helped fuel my career in health and wellness, and I’m so thankful for the path it helped me build.”
