General Notice of Collection and Use of Personal Information
Algoma University collects personal information from students, employees, members of the University community and governing bodies, or any other individual (as defined in Policy – Access to Information and Protection of Privacy) under the authority of the Algoma University Act, 2008 and in accordance with applicable privacy legislation.
Personal information is collected for the administration of University programs and activities, and to carry out University operations and lawful activities. The below is a list of some of the lawful activities the University collects and uses personal information. This list is for description purposes only and is not exhaustive:
- Recruitment, eligibility verification, admissions, registration, academic programs, evaluations, graduation;
- University-related student activities;
- Evaluation of academic and non-academic programs;
- Activities of student, alumni, and/or retiree groups;
- Financial assistance, awards and payment of fees;
- Alumni and development activities;
- Institutional planning, statistics and reporting;
- Quality improvement, centralization or sharing of service delivery among academic units, administrative services and/or programs;
- Safety and security;
- Reporting to third parties such government agencies, funding agencies and professional licensing bodies;
- Fulfillment of requirements related to affiliated institutions and agreements;
- Employment related matters;
- Detection, monitoring and prevention of non-compliance with policies, procedures, regulations and legislation;
- Promotion and publications in print and digital format.
The University may collect personal information about students, employees, members of the University community and governing bodies, or other individuals from publicly available sources, including the internet, social media, or other mediums. This collection is limited to the minimum personal information necessary and only what is required for the University’s operations, administration, or lawful activities, including but not limited to:
- Planning, reviewing, or delivering programs and services;
- Conducting research and statistical analyses; and
- Ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
The University considers the following information as information collected and maintained for the purpose of creating a record that is available to the public and that may be published in print, electronic format or on the Internet:
- the degree or degrees conferred by the University and the date received; and
- the recipient of excellence scholarships or other prizes or honours awarded by the University or a third party.
