Algoma University celebrates largest graduating class in institution’s history

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – June 8, 2024): Today, the Algoma University community celebrated the convocation of the largest graduating class yet on the Sault Ste. Marie campus, with over 500 grads walking the stage in Saturday’s ceremony.

The convocation ceremony featured tributes to Algoma University professor and Tier II Canada Research Chair in Healing and Reconciliation Paulette Steeves, PhD, and bestowed an honourary Doctorate of Social Work on renowned scholar, educator, researcher, and writer George Safa Dei, PhD.

Atul Kumar was awarded the prestigious Governor General’s Silver Medal, presented each year to the student with the highest academic average among their graduating class. The Bear Creek Singers welcomed guests with a traditional Ojibwe welcome song, and the 49th Field Regiment Pipers led graduates in their procession.

“As we celebrate the achievements of our largest cohort of graduates, we are reminded of the rigorous academic standards and environment of honesty, trust, fairness, and respect that these students have thrived in,” said President and Vice-chancellor Asima Vezina, PhD. “Our graduates leave Algoma U not only with knowledge and skills but with the principles that will guide them to make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond. I am extremely proud of the Class of 2024 – congratulations, Thunderbirds!”
