Algoma University Celebrates Book Launch with Proceeds Supporting Student Success

Algoma University welcomed community members, alumni, faculty, staff, and students to the official book launch celebration of Algoma University: Our Story – Honouring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Welcoming the Future on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Arthur Wishart Library in Sault Ste. Marie.

Independently researched and written by Algoma University Chancellor, Mario Turco, the book captures the institution’s rich and complex history, from its origins connected to the Shingwauk Indian Residential School to its evolution as an internationally recognized public university committed to cross-cultural learning, reconciliation, and community.

“It has been an incredible honour to help tell the story of Algoma University,” said Turco. “This book reflects the resilience, spirit, and shared history of the people who have shaped this institution, the Survivors of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, our alumni, faculty, staff, donors, partners, and students. My hope is that readers will not only learn about our past, but also feel inspired by the strength of our community and the future we continue to build together.”

The book launch celebrated not only the publication of the book, but also its broader impact on future generations of students. Proceeds from book sales will directly support Algoma University scholarships and bursaries, helping students pursue their educational goals and access meaningful opportunities for learning and growth.

“This book honours the important history and evolution of Algoma University while also helping invest in its future,” added Dr. Sheila Embleton, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor. “By directing proceeds toward student scholarships and bursaries, this initiative will help remove barriers to education and support students as they pursue their academic journeys and future aspirations.”

Copies of the book are available for purchase at Algoma University’s Wishart Library in Sault Ste. Marie or at Gallery 35, at 35 Queen St. W in Brampton.
