(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – May 6, 2016): With funding support provided by Science Odyssey, Algoma University and NORDIK Institute shall be hosting a series of events over the next 10 days aimed at increasing understanding and awareness of how climate change, water access and food security is impacting the Algoma region, as well as how they impact rural communities in Colombia.

“Some of the most challenging issues facing us have tremendous social impact, but also require scientific knowledge to achieve resolution” says Dr. Gayle Broad, of the Community Economic and Social Development program, and Research Director of NORDIK Institute.  “Young people often have the best ideas, but need opportunities to bring these potential solutions to greater public awareness.  This series of events is designed to bring young people together to share their ideas, learn from each other, and also contribute to the growing global understanding of how these issues impact our environment and ourselves”.

Partnering with a host of local organizations has made five events possible, beginning on Saturday, May 7 at Echo Bay, where the Youth Algoma Poultry Association will co-host workshops on composting, food preserving and fermentation, as well as a bunny and poultry sale from 10 – 1.  May 9, from 6 – 8 pm the Gore St. Café is hosting a “Spoken Word” workshop for youth to use a creative way to express their thoughts and feelings on how we can become more responsible in our stewardship of the environment. The Urban Aboriginal School and White Pines will host events in their classrooms, while the final event at Algoma University on Thursday, May 19 from 4:30 – 6:40 will include a photo exhibit, open to all youth, and a conversation via skype with youth in Colombia on these topics.

“We welcome youth to participate in any or all of these events” says Felix Kofi, student events coordinator.  “We hope to have some great photos at our final event that illustrate how youth here in our region see climate change, water access and food security affecting us, as well as possible solutions to these issues”.   All of the events are free and refreshments and bus tokens will be provided.
