(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – August 12, 2015): It is with great pleasure that Algoma University congratulates Shelley Mitchell on winning the Algoma University Thunderbird Award.
The Thunderbird Award is given to a member of the Algoma University Staff Association nominated by their peers. The award winner must make exemplary contributions to campus life, and exude a commitment to service excellence and the University’s mission and vision. The final decision is then made by the Award’s Committee.
Darla Pirillo, the Director of Human Resources at the University, highlighted Mitchell’s attributes and strong work ethic. “This year’s recipient, Shelley, received endorsements from her peers in various departments across the University. Shelley’s commitment to serving students, dedication to service excellence, and enthusiasm and passion helps make the halls at Algoma U a pleasant place to work and learn. She can be described as someone with an ongoing commitment to go above and beyond.”
Mitchell is the Assistant Registrar, Admissions and has been with the University for over 24 years. In her role, she is responsible for working with prospective and current students from the application process through to graduation. She handles a plethora of difficult application scenarios on a daily basis, and ensures students have a seamless transition from high school, college, and university, both at home and abroad. She works hard every day to build Algoma U’s reputation for service excellence, both internally and externally. Mitchell is constantly commended for her professionalism, attention to detail, and exceptional customer service by students, staff, faculty, administrators, and representatives from around the world. Mitchell also works with the Senate Academic Regulations and Petitions Committee. Her knowledge and expertise of University affairs and proceedings makes her an asset and she is always willing to share her knowledge with others, increasing the confidence of her colleagues.
“I’d like to extend my sincere thanks for being chosen as the 2016 Thunderbird Award recipient,” says Mitchell. “It is truly an honour to have been chosen. My fellow co-workers and the students that I am so fortunate to work with each day make coming into work so rewarding.”
The announcement was made yesterday at the University’s annual Employee Appreciation Event in front of staff, faculty, and administration.
