(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – July 5, 2017): Algoma University is pleased to announce that Jackson Reed’s album, The November Gales, earned Album of the Year at the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards (NOMFA).

From Goulais River, Ontario, Jackson Reed is a first year music student at Algoma University and a Canadian songwriter. His latest album, The November Gales, is nostalgic in nature, featuring songs like “Generation Vietnam”, “Goodbye Endless Summer”, and “Welcome Home”.  Reed has toured Canada on banjo and guitar with artists Old Cabin + Bosveld. He has collaborated with Aidan Knight, Fog Lake, and The Wooden Sky. He will be playing at River & Sky Music/Camping Festival this July.

Reed also received a nomination for Best Video at the NOMFA for “Goodbye Endless Summer”.

“I would like to congratulate Jackson on this wonderful achievement,” said Dr. Edward Turgeon, Chair of the Music and Visual Arts Department at the University. “This is such a stellar accomplishment that bodes well for Jackson’s budding career. Of late, significant prizes and awards seem to flow on a monthly basis for Algoma’s Music and Visual Arts Department. This speaks volumes to the quality and talent of our students and faculty.”

Reed was surprised to have earned the accolade and considered himself one of the underdogs amongst a very talented list of nominees: “It’s a good thing to win this! I get to use it for grants, festivals and my bio. The ceremony and conference was cool. I really wasn’t expecting to win because my album was only four songs and I was up against some strong records.”

Throughout his studies at Algoma, Reed is excited to make stronger music, perfect his music communication skills, and use complex string and woodwind arrangements. He is looking forward to studying closer to home and in an environment that is more conducive to creating music due to its proximity to nature.
