Algoma University Students’ Union to Revitalize SpeakEasy with Impressive Investment

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON- December 9, 2020) The Algoma University Students’ Union (AUSU)  is excited to announce that a $1.7M investment to revitalize the current SpeakEasy student space is ready to commence. The initiative aligns with the initial phase of the development outlined in the recently approved Campus Master Plan that will guide the vision and direction of the Sault Ste. Marie campus over the next five to ten years.

“This project is the result of ongoing efforts by AUSU and the University to enhance the overall student experience and modernize campus spaces,” shared AUSU President Yahaya Alphonse. “Students need an updated and functional space where they can study, socialize, enjoy meals and eventually congregate for events comfortably when it is safe to do so. I am very proud of this project, and the significant investment AUSU has made to ensure its success and provide students with a great experience.”

The SpeakEasy redesign plan was completed by David Ellis Architect and IBI Group with local construction company S & T Group being named as the successful contractor during a recent tendering process. Site preparation has commenced with the anticipated construction moving forward in the coming weeks once associated permits have been secured. Project completion is slated for May 2021, just in time to welcome a new intake of spring term students.

“I am thrilled to see AUSU’s leadership and commitment in supporting the overall university prioritiy of improving student experience,” shared President and Vice-Chancellor Asima Vezina. “This is a student- driven project and they have done an absolutely outstanding job. This redesign and refresh of the SpeakEasy on the SSM campus is integral to the overall strategy in our Campus Master Plan where students asked us to focus on improving student spaces (academic and social). The student leadership at Algoma has worked closely with IBI and Ellis Architects over the past year to design a unique, welcoming, inviting space – reimagining the SpeakEasy to become something that meets the needs of today’s student. Congratulations AUSU on bringing this vision to fruition!”
