Algoma U at Timmins Celebrates Success of New and Graduating Students

Yesterday, Algoma University (AU) celebrated the academic accomplishments of its graduating students studying in Timmins at the 2023 Convocation Ceremony held at the Best Western Premier Northwood Hotel.

Chancellor Mario Turco and President and Vice-Chancellor Asima Vezina awarded degrees to students who successfully completed the requirements of the Certificate in First Nation Social Policy and Community Development, Honours Bachelor of Social Work degree, and Bachelor of Arts in Community Development degree programs offered by Algoma University at the Timmins campus of Northern College.

In addition to celebrating the achievement of those who successfully completed their studies, incoming Algoma University student Jason Clement was recognized during the 2023 Northern College Grad Awards Ceremony with the “Commitment to ‘Northern. Value.’ Bursary.” This entrance scholarship is awarded to Northern College graduates who are continuing their post-secondary education through Algoma University programming in Timmins. The bursary is tied to a special joint admissions agreement established between the two post-secondary institutions.

“On behalf of Algoma University, we want to congratulate all of our graduates,” shared President and Vice-Chancellor Asima Vezina. “Through ongoing collaboration with our strategic partners from Northern College and the Timmins community, Algoma University has been able to expand access to academic opportunities for students while responding to in-demand community needs across the North. We look forward to welcoming many of these students back into the newest Masters programs that will be underway and in place beginning Fall 2023 and moving into the 2024 year: Masters in Computer Science, Masters in Business, and Masters in Social Work. We want to thank the community for all of their support, both to the University and to these graduates, and we look forward to continuing to expand university access within the Northeast.”

Algoma looks forward to continued collaboration with Northern College to address post-secondary programming needs in Timmins and the surrounding region; working to continue cultivating cross-cultural learning between Anishinaabe communities and other communities in the north.

The University also looks forward to the upcoming Convocation ceremonies in Sault Ste. Marie and Brampton later this month.

Congratulations to all of our 2023 Graduates:
