The Business of Esports Certificate

As the first university in Ontario to offer esports programming, Algoma University’s School of Business and Economics will launch the The Business of Esports Certificate in September 2022.

This certificate is a one year, two semester program that will provide the relevant skills to an esports enthusiast looking to work in the esports industry as well as entrepreneurs who want to develop their own personal brand within the industry.

The Business of Esports Certificate allows professionals to upgrade their skills to the university level without a commitment of 3-4 years. For those direct from high school, The Business of Esports Certificate also presents an excellent opportunity to learn and develop industry specific skills.

The Business of Esports Certificate will provide students with the knowledge to pursue professional careers in the growing esports industry expected to cross USD 1.6 billion in revenue by 2024. It is expected that the number of online streamers of online games will rise to one billion by 2025, which is equal to one in nine people. In 2021, the global esports market was valued at just over USD 1.08 billion , an almost 50 percent increase from the previous year.

The growth of esports in Canada is also prevalent. Over the course of the past two years, the number of Canadian video game companies increased by 16%. The video game industry contributed $4.5 billion to Canada’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2019. Furthermore, the industry is estimated to create 135,773 direct jobs, 80,507 indirect jobs and 50,977 induced jobs. These figures indicate that demand will rise for business professionals in various positions within the esports industry.

The Business of Esports graduates will receive a certificate in The Business of Esports.  The 10 course (30 credit) certificate, provides those interested in working and managing the business side of esports an opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and abilities they will need to be successful in this industry.

The Business of Esports certificate will provide students with current courses relevant to the needs of the  esports industry. Our  students will have contact with, and access to, subject matter experts who have real-world relevant experience and networking opportunities that will enhance their careers. 

Students in this program will have the opportunity to participate in academic esports events and tournaments and gain valuable knowledge through experiential learning opportunities.

The Business of Esports Certificate

Semester 1

  • ADMN 1706 – Introduction to Esports
  • ADMN 1707 – Understanding Esports Infrastructure
  • ADMN 2706 – Marketing Strategy for Esports
  • ADMN 2707 – Fundamentals of Esports Management
  • ADMN 2756 – Production, Content Creation, and Broadcasting for Esports

Semester 2

  • ADMN 3706 – Education and Personal Wellness Within Esports
  • ADMN 3707 – Brand Activation and Sponsorship for Esports  
  • ADMN 3756 – Event Planning for Esports
  • ADMN 4706 – Esports in the Global Market 
  • ADMN 4707 – Esports Law
Develop a range of in-demand skills

Students will have an opportunity to develop a range of in-demand skills that relate to the Esport industry, including:

  • Be able to identify areas of growth in the Canadian Esports market and be the first mover in these new markets.
  • Learn to increase brand identity by developing and implementing effective marketing strategies for Esports teams.
  • Learn to cultivate your own management style geared toward delivering desired results in the  Esports industry.
  • Be able to identify key stakeholders within the esports ecosystem and what role they play in the overall esports industry.
  • Learn the importance of intellectual property and how you can protect teams, players and independent leagues.
  • Be able to develop industry standard practices for events and projects that meet the esports industry needs.   
  • Develop successful brand activation tactics that can be used for online and in person events for teams, leagues and stand alone events.
  • Be able to successfully identify current trends in technology and their impacts on the esports industry.

As esports continues to grow as a viable business, the industry has witnessed an increase in demand for esports arenas, tournaments, leagues for gamers/participants as well as esports streaming services such as Twitch, Steam for viewers. In order to sustain industry growth, there exists a strong requirement for industry experts to obtain an active and thorough understanding of business management principles and concepts, ranging from business development, planning, marketing to budgeting and operations. Leveraging these business concepts is crucial in optimizing end user experience as well as establishing sustainable avenues that facilitate revenue growth.

The one year Business of Esports Certificate will introduce students to the world of esports through the business management and development lens. 

 

FUN FACT:

To support the rapidly growing esports industry, and to prepare students for careers in the video game and esports sector, the Ontario government has earmarked $1 m into launching a new scholarship for post-secondary students enrolled in programs related to esports starting in the Fall of 2022.

The province says it is setting aside $1 million over two years for the scholarship, which will offer financial assistance to students in programs related to the game design, development, marketing and innovation industry.

Students in The Business of Esports certificate can transfer the courses to a degree program as electives.

For those direct from High School, The Business of Esports Certificate presents an excellent opportunity to learn and develop industry specific skills, giving you the edge over your competition. Applicants who are interested in The Business of Esports certificate and are pursuing a degree at Algoma university, have the opportunity to graduate from their respected program along with The Business of Esports certificate.

The Business of Esports Certificate is a one year, two semester, program consisting of the following courses:

Semester 1 

  • ADMN 1706 – Introduction to Esports
  • ADMN 1707 – Understanding Esports Infrastructure
  • ADMN 2706 – Marketing Strategy for Esports
  • ADMN 2707 – Fundamentals of Esports Management
  • ADMN 2756- Production, Content Creation, and Broadcasting for Esports

Semester 2

For maximum flexibility, we will offer The Business of Esports courses through distance education (online).  If there is demand we will consider offering courses in-person, blended, or hybrid, depending on what meets the needs of our students.

* Definitions: 

In-person instruction: means a class that meets in a classroom at the scheduled time/day, with the instructor and all students present (synchronous).

Blended instruction: means a class for which the instructor is present in the classroom at the scheduled time/day (synchronous), with ± 50% of the students present, and ± 50% of the students doing self-directed learning, including but not limited to activities such as sustained reading, completing assignments, watching recorded lectures on their own schedule (asynchronous). The student groups flip each week.

Hybrid instruction (also called “HyFlex”): means a class for which the instructor is present in the classroom at the scheduled time/day, with students present who wish to attend in person, and students who prefer not to attend in person participating remotely at the same time (synchronous). The student makes the choice for any given class and can switch as needed. Requires additional support for content preparation, technology and class management.

Distance education: means a class for which the course materials–lectures, videos, assignments, assessments, discussion boards, etc.–are prepared prior to course delivery, and which students take on their own schedule (asynchronous). Delivered on the Brightspace platform.

The Business of Esports | Annual Tuition and Fees* | Starting: September  07, 2022

International Students: $20,758.10 CAD Domestic Students: $6,807.28 CAD

 

International Admissions

Admission requirements are unique to various countries and International Curriculums. 

A grade of 70% (B grade) or equivalent is required from all curriculums in order to meet the admission grade requirement for the program.

A graduation certificate along with a transcript showing courses completed and grades achieved is required in order to determine eligibility for the program.

English language requirement: 

The IELTS requirement for the The Business of Esports program will be an overall score of 6.0 [including 6.0 in each band of reading, writing, listening and speaking]. Proof of English language proficiency is required from all countries where English is not the first language. English Language Requirements must be met for admission into Algoma University. 

Domestic Admissions 

Ontario Student Requirements:

  • ENG4U
  • Two U/M MATH
    • (MDM4U recommended)
  • Minimum 70% overall average

Students applying as transfer students must have achieved a minimum overall average of 70% from post-secondary studies from an accredited diploma/degree-granting institution.

  • Transcripts from both secondary school and post-secondary institutions attended are required in order to determine eligibility for the program
  • The transcripts must indicate courses completed, grades achieved, graduation certificate from secondary school and a graduation certificate from post-secondary school if awarded

From another University: This is done on a case by case basis.  

From an Ontario College – Pathway Agreements are in place with every College in Ontario.

No problem – you can do The Business of Esports Certificate! The Certificate allows professionals to upgrade their skills to the university level without a commitment of  3-4 years. For those direct from High School, it also presents an excellent opportunity to learn and develop industry specific skills.

The Business of Esports programming (both the specialization and the certificate) is designed to meet the growing demand for business knowledge and acumen within the esports industry.  Both the specialization and the certificate consist of 10 courses (30 credits) that cover the business behind the esports industry.

The Business of Esports Specialization is part of the four year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree.  Students will graduate with a BBA and a specialization in The Business of Esports.

The Business of Esports Certificate is a 10 course, stand alone, one year program. Students will graduate with a certificate in The Business of Esports. If students taking this certificate are interested in taking the BBA the courses are transferable and students will be given degree credits for the courses they took as part of the certificate.

Upon successful completion of courses from The Business of Esports Certificate, students can  transfer into the BBA or any other bachelor program offered at Algoma University. 

Note: Courses completed in The Business of Esports certificate will transfer over as elective credits to a degree program.
