Career Link

Career Link is a free, opt-in non-credit CareerLink Certificate that all students can enroll in, and provides an array of resources for your career development.

Built on current research on what employers are seeking and partnerships with community organizations, the program allows students to build high-demand skills that are relevant in the Northern Ontario Labour market and beyond.

Students have the option to choose from a wide variety of Career Link Badges or “Links” based on their own interests and needs. Only students that complete the “Required Components” of the particular Badge/Link they have enrolled in will earn the non-credit CareerLink certificate.

The self-paced structure of the program allows for flexibility in accessing resources and supports that fit individual needs and goals. Upon registering in a “Career Link Cohort” at the beginning of each semester, students will be guided through all components of the link and will have one term to participate in the workshops, events, professional development activities and advising sessions to complete the program. Career Link participants will also gain access to a one-on-one career guidance session.

While some components and events will be offered live (scheduled at a specific time), most program components can be accessed and completed at any time and in almost any order. Upon completion of all the required components of the chosen CareerLink, students earn a Career Link digital badge and a CareerLink certificate if they successfully earn three or more badges.

Complete the “Required Components” of the selected module by the last day of the term to successfully earn the CareerLink Badge

In today’s competitive job market, a generic resume and cover letter will not make the cut. A professionally crafted self-marketing tool kit that includes a custom-developed resume and cover letter, in addition to other job search documents is needed to successfully establish? the career that is perfect for you.

This module will help you with selecting a resume style; editing, proofreading, and formatting your resume and cover letter; exploring your transferable skills; developing accomplishment statements; targeting your resumes and cover letters to each position, and even interview preparation.

Complete the required components listed below in the given order to earn the Self-marketing Foundations digital badge:

  • Complete the registration form
  • Complete one job search document or the interview preparation section 
  • Job search document critique or mock interview appointment- submit the booking form to schedule your appointment
  • Complete the post-survey and email the screenshot the survey completion page to [email protected]

  • Complete the registration form
  • Utilize at least one self assessment tool 
  • Utilize one of the Labour Market Research tools below
  • Attend a one-on-one personalized career guidance session- submit the booking form to schedule your appointment
  • Complete the post-survey and email the screenshot the survey completion page to [email protected]

 

Students gain the following competencies on successful completion:

  • Professional Behaviour and Personal Awareness

  • Skills assessments and relevant job matching: Tools and programs that help young people understand their skills, aptitude, personality, character traits and interests to increase self-awareness and career-related decision making.
  • Career counseling: Access to career experts, programs or tools that inform, coach and further develop career plans for young people (i.e. career transition, job search, resume help, long-term career planning and goal setting, interview prep, and job applications).
  • Access to labour market information: Tools, resources and research that make labour market information more accessible and/or user-friendly to young people.

Complete the required components listed below in the given order to earn the Professional Networking digital badge:

  • Complete the registration form
  • Create a profile and complete the steps for Ten Thousand Coffees or LinkedIn
  • Attend a one-on-one personalized career guidance session to discuss your personal development strategy- submit the booking form to schedule your appointment
  • Complete the post-survey and email the screenshot the survey completion page to [email protected]

  • Work-relevant networks: Access to networking events or programs that connect to a sector, industry or employment opportunities.
  • Mentorships: A mentor is an individual that provides advice, support, and encouragement to young people as they prepare for, and start, work.
  • Communication: Ability to listen to, understand, convey, and contextualize information through verbal, nonverbal, visual and written means.

This module assists students with conducting an effective job search, and also getting prepared for successfully entering the workforce. 

Students are encouraged to explore resources in their areas of interest and utilize various networking platforms.

  • Utilize one of the networking platform (10KC or LinkedIn) and follow the steps listed above 
  • Use at least one of the listed resources
  • Attend a one-on-one personalized career guidance session to discuss your personal development strategy- submit the booking form to schedule your appointment
