On October 23rd, the 2019 Algoma University John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner took place at The Water Tower Inn, raising $42,000 to support the ongoing issuance of this annual award. This year’s dinner honoured the tremendous contribution the McDougall family has made to our community while recognizing this year’s recipient of the John R. Rhodes Scholarship, Claudia Aguas.
For the McDougall family, family values and community-minded investment has been the forefront of a business model that has successfully guided the family-owned business for over 70 years. Now in its third generation of family ownership, the company has grown to become one of Canada’s largest marketers and distributors of heating oil, propane, gasoline, diesel fuel, and commercial lubricants, as well as being a leading multi-brand retailer.
“Algoma University is pleased to honour the McDougall family for all of their accomplishments, both personally and professionally,” said Donna Hilsinger, Chair of the John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner Committee. “The McDougall’s have built a successful business and have generously supported the Sault Ste. Marie community for generations.”
The John R. Rhodes Scholarship was established in 1979 thanks to generous contributions from friends and family of the late John R. Rhodes. The prestigious scholarship, valued at $3,000, is offered to a high school graduate who embodies the integrity, leadership, and commitment to community service demonstrated by Rhodes throughout his life as a broadcaster, community member, and politician. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years, providing the recipient maintains a minimum average of 80 percent each academic year.
This year’s scholarship recipient, Claudia Aguas, is a first-year Psychology student from Ajax, Ontario. Claudia, who assumed a range of student leadership and athletic roles while a secondary level student, is also a member of the Algoma University Thunderbirds varsity soccer team.
