2026 Emerging Leader Alumni Award Winner: Christopher Thompson

The Algoma University Emerging Leader Alumni Award recognizes the accomplishments of an Alumni who demonstrates exceptional early-career achievements, leadership potential, and a strong promise for future impact. The 2026 Emerging Leader Award is proudly presented to Christopher Thompson (BA ’19).

Thompson graduated cum laude from the Law and Justice program at Algoma University, an experience that deeply rooted him in the close-knit culture of the Algoma District. His time on campus blossomed after taking a foundational class with Jerry Fontaine, which connected him to the history and land of the institution.

A pivotal mentorship with Sault Ste. Marie counsel Wayne Chorney provided Thompson with a full-semester placement. This experience focused on real courtroom legal problems and cemented his desire to practice criminal law. After earning a dual Canadian and American law degree from the University of Windsor and working for the Ministry of the Attorney General, he articled for the Crown’s Office in Algoma.

Shortly after his call to the Bar, Thompson achieved a major milestone by becoming the designated Assistant Crown Attorney for child exploitation cases in the Algoma region. Prosecuting these complex, sensitive files allows him to show leadership by protecting the most vulnerable community members alongside local police services.

Thompson reconnected with Fontaine in 2025 during the Bimickaway Indigenous Studies Training in Toronto, where he was honoured to receive an Eagle Feather. Outside the courtroom, he channels his competitive spirit into a passion for sports, whether he is travelling to Europe to cheer on Liverpool or watching a game with friends.
