Algoma U Homecoming Kicks-Off September 20th

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – September 17, 2018): Algoma University’s annual Homecoming celebration kicks-off this Thursday, September 20th. For three days, the University will be hosting a variety of events on campus and within Sault Ste. Marie for alumni, students, and community members.

“We’re really excited for the Homecoming 2018 celebration,” said Patrick Murray, Chair of the Algoma University Alumni Council. “Each year, Homecoming is growing in both attendees and activities. We welcome back more and more alumni and community members. With an action-packed lineup, Homecoming 2018 is sure to create long-lasting memories for our current students and have alumni reminiscing of their days as Algoma University undergrads. The weekend is aimed toward the local community as well, so we encourage everyone to attend and join us for a great time!”

A full schedule of events follows. All events are free of charge unless otherwise noted.

For more information on Homecoming, please contact Bev Teller, Alumni and Development Officer, at [email protected] or call 705.949.2301, Ext. 4125.

Thursday, September 20, 2018:

  • Algoma U Kick-Off Party (5:00pm – 8:00pm)

Help us kick-off Homecoming weekend with a party in the George Leach Centre parking lot. Grab a bite to eat and an ice cold brew, while enjoying some games and live music. It’s the perfect way to end the work day. The parking lot will be fully licensed by the LLBO.

  • Anishinaabe Social (6:00pm – 8:00pm)

Are you an Anishinaabe alumni of either Algoma U or Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig? Then we want to see you! Join us for a mixer at the Canadian Upper Deck       where you’ll get to reminisce with classmates, network, and enjoy some appetizers.

  • Alumni Hockey Game (8:30pm – 9:30pm)

Once again the Alumni Hockey Team will be lacing up their skates at the John Rhodes Arena for a good ol’ fashioned hockey game. Come cheer on the team that includes alumni new and old – some who were even coached by George Leach himself in the 1970s and 1980s!

Friday, September 21, 2018:

  • South Asian Night (5:30pm – 8:30pm)

Come and savour in the tastes and flavours of South Asia! Our international students will be preparing delicacies from their home countries of Sri Lanka, Iran, India and Bangladesh, while also sharing their cultural traditions. This event is always “sold out” so come early to get a seat in the Shingwauk Auditorium.

  • Acoustic Open Mic Night (8:30pm – 12:00am)

Calling all musicians! We’re giving away $1000 in prize money! Back by popular demand is the annual Acoustic Open Mic Night in The Speakeasy. Each performer will be given a timed 10-minute set. All performances must be done in an acoustic arrangement. No technology-assisted equipment allowed. Please come early to be guaranteed a performance time slot as last year’s event filled up fast. Time slots for performances will be drawn at random throughout the course of the evening. Performances will be judged by three community members. You must be in attendance to claim your prize! The third place finisher will win $200; the runner-up will receive $300; and the grand prize winner will walk away with $500! Come and showcase your talents, or sit back, relax, and enjoy the local talent! Admission to the event is by cash donation or by donation of a non-perishable food item to the Algoma U Student Food Bank.
