(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – March 21, 2018): Today, dubbed the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Algoma University will be hosting three events to celebrate the University’s diversity while also building a more inclusive and just community.
At 11:30am, the University will be hosting a community barbecue and potluck in The Speakeasy. Food served will have a cultural flair, and attendees will be treated to special musical performances from international students and the Algoma U Jazz Ensemble. Pauline Danquah, the incoming President of the Algoma University Students’ Union (AUSU) and Jane Omollo of New to the Sault, will deliver speeches on the significance of the day.
At 4:00pm in the Arthur A. Wishart Library, the University will be celebrating the literary achievements of seven students, who through essay and creative non-fiction, have expressed their points of view on diversity, equity, and inclusion, in the inaugural Algoma U Writes competition. Guests in attendance will be provided with a published copy of all winning submissions. This event is sponsored by the University’s Department of English and Film, OPSEU Local 685, and AUSU.
At 6:00pm, the University will be hosting a Trivia Night in The Speakeasy. Teams of three to five people are invited to participate. Individual participants will be assigned a team. Refreshments will be provided and door prizes will be drawn throughout the evening. No registration required.
