Algoma University Celebrates 28th Annual Student Awards Virtually

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – April 5, 2022): Today, the Algoma University community virtually celebrated the academic achievements of its students while recognizing the generous contributions of the many supporters of the University’s scholarship and bursary program.

Video messages for the 28th Annual Algoma University Student Awards highlighted the appreciation of this year’s award winners and the individuals and organizations that made them a reality. A total of $1,100,776 was distributed this year, including entrance and renewable scholarships, as well as entrance and in-course bursaries.

“The students we are recognizing this year are among our best and brightest,” shared Vice President of Finance and Operations Shannon Brooks. “I am so proud of each of these students – two years into a global pandemic, they have shown incredible resilience in navigating this situation while continuing to achieve an impressive record of academic excellence. It is so important to celebrate these significant accomplishments and to take the time to thank our generous donors for their continued support and contributions to the University and our students; congratulations Thunderbirds!”

The annual student awards acknowledge the academic accomplishments of both new and returning Algoma University students. The event highlights the importance of these financial awards and continued community support while providing an opportunity for both the university and the award recipients to express their gratitude to the donors who make these generous awards possible.

“I would like to thank all of the donors who have acknowledged me with the Black Opportunities Award. To me, this award means a lot because it shows that the donors and the University acknowledge the black community and the Caribbean community. This award will help me financially, relieving financial pressure and helping me focus on my academics and pursuing any careers I desire in the future,” shared current biology student Anton Peters, winner of the Black Opportunities Bursary and the Athletic Financial Assistance Bursary.
