Honouring Leaders in Education, Advocacy and Community Service
(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – June 14, 2025): Algoma University proudly celebrated its 2025 Spring Convocation, conferring degrees on 440 graduates during a ceremony held at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion in Sault Ste. Marie.
This year’s celebration was highlighted by the presentation of an Honorary Doctorate to Shirley Horn — Algoma University’s first-ever Chancellor, a revered Elder, Residential School Survivor, and Co-Founder of the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA). Horn received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts in recognition of her lifetime of advocacy, wisdom, and leadership. A long-standing friend and guide to the University, her voice and vision have been central to Algoma U’s truth, reconciliation, and resurgence efforts.
Algoma University also proudly presented the Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal, awarded to the undergraduate student with the highest academic standing across all campuses. This year’s recipient is Chloe Haney, a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology graduate who is headed to Teacher’s College. Chloe exemplifies academic excellence, perseverance, and a deep commitment to learning.
“As we reflect on this record-breaking year, we are reminded that Convocation is more than a celebration of academic achievement—it is a reflection of the power of learning, healing, and leadership,” said Dr. Donna Rogers, Interim President and Vice-Chancellor of Algoma University. “We are deeply honoured to recognize these extraordinary individuals who embody the spirit of Algoma U and the transformative potential of education.”
Several additional awards recognized exceptional contributions from across the Algoma University community:
