Algoma University Takes the Plunge at Bon Soo Winter Carnival: Supporting the 2025 ‘Hunger Freeze’ Food Drive

Students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members unite to collect canned goods and raise funds for local food pantries

University is thrilled to once again participate in the Bon Soo Polar Bear Plunge, rallying students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community partners for the 2025 ‘Hunger Freeze’ campaign. This vital fundraising initiative supports local food pantries, including the Algoma University Student Food Pantry, reinforcing the University’s commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive community.

Participants and supporters are encouraged to contribute canned goods or financially donate at the George Leach Centre, YMCA, Group Health Centre, Northern Community Centre, YNCU Curling Centre, YNCU Bay and Trunk Road locations, Interfor, or online through the CanadaHelps fundraising platform (link here). Each donation helps bring the campaign closer to its goal–every contribution increases the number of participants willing to brave the icy waters in support of those in need. Should the campaign reach 5,000 items, the participating Algoma University team members will take the plunge.

“Algoma University is proud to stand alongside our community partners in addressing food insecurity,” shared Rachel Rankin, Director of Student Life and Ancillary Services at Algoma University. “The excitement and gratitude we feel seeing our community come together for the Hunger Freeze is truly inspiring. Every donation represents hope and support for students and the greater Sault Ste. Marie community.”
