Algoma University is proud to announce that Jeff Elgie will be the 2025 Honouree at the annual John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner in October. A trailblazing entrepreneur, community builder, and exemplary leader, Elgie’s career has transformed the landscape of Canadian journalism and continues to uplift communities through innovation, philanthropy, and a deep commitment to local impact.
As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Village Media, Elgie has transformed two small Northern Ontario news publications into one of Canada’s largest and most respected digital-only news networks, branching across 30 locally owned sites and more than 125 partner platforms across North America. Under Elgie’s leadership, Village Media has remained firmly headquartered in Sault Ste. Marie, reflecting an unwavering dedication to his hometown.
“It’s a tremendous honour to be recognized by Algoma University, especially in connection with John Rhodes’ legacy,” said Jeff Elgie. “I’ve always believed that when local people invest in their own communities—with their ideas, their energy, and their hearts—incredible things can happen. That belief has only been reinforced by the incredible team at Village Media and the many community partners we have worked closely with over the years. This honour reflects all of them—and the power of what we can build together, right here at home.”
Beyond establishing Sault Ste. Marie as a hub for journalistic excellence, Elgie has made giving back to the community a core principle of his work. Village Media’s Random Acts of Kindness and Community Match programs have provided support to countless families, non-profits, and grassroots initiatives, fostering stronger, more connected communities. Through in-kind advertising and editorial support, the company has donated over $500,000 annually in resources to purpose-driven organizations across Ontario.
Elgie’s commitment to community extends into his personal investments as well. As co-owner of several local businesses, OutSpoken Brewing, Peace Restaurant, and DIG (Digital Intelligence Group), he continues to contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of the Sault.
“The annual John Rhodes Scholarship Dinner celebrates the enduring legacy of the Rhodes Family’s impact on Algoma University, and we are proud to honour the donors and community members who make this opportunity possible,” said Colin Wilson, Director of Strategic Advancement. “This year, we are especially pleased to recognize Jeff Elgie, a visionary leader, whose entrepreneurial spirit and deep commitment to community mirror the very ideals of the John Rhodes Scholarship. As CEO of Village Media, Jeff exemplifies how local roots and global thinking can combine to drive meaningful change—making him a fitting champion of this award.”
