Algoma University Wrestlers Achieve National Top Ten Ranking

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON- January 22, 2019): Members of the Algoma University Thunderbirds Wrestling team have a lot to celebrate this month, with two students climbing further up the USports national rankings.  The progress has resulted in the team being ranked tenth overall in the country; great news for the Thunderbirds!

Bryce Davis is ranked 1st in the country, at 72 kilos he is ‘top dog’ in his category, a first for a member of the Thunderbirds. Teammate Brody Collison is now ranked 4th in the 57-kilogram division, pushing the Men’s team to 10th overall in the national standings.

Bryce is proud of his teammates and excited about this distinction. “I feel humbled and motivated to be first in the nation. This new ranking makes me feel that my consistent hard work and dedication is paying off. With our program still being so young, it is great to see the early strides that our team is making.” Brody agrees and is confident that the team is headed in the right direction. “It feels nice to be recognized and it’s great to see Algoma crack the national top 10 rankings. It shows the hard work and commitment to improvement that our Men’s team shows day in and day out.”

Coach Trevor Manchester shared that having the Thunderbirds make these rankings is a big step for the Algoma U Wrestling program and that the team is more motivated than ever to end the season on high note. “Our program is young, and these rankings show the progress these student-athletes have made on the mats throughout the last couple of years. Being ranked as a team goes to show the improvement not just in the individual athlete, but in our wrestling program as a whole.  I know that our team is as excited as I am to compete at the OUA and USports Championships to show that these rankings are well deserved.

“This is great recognition for the hard work that Bryce, Brody, and the entire team are putting in to be recognized on the national stage,” said Dave Trudelle, Director of Student Experience. “As a relatively young program in the OUA and U-Sports, hosting the OUA championships last year and now having this recognition is a testament to how quickly our Thunderbird Wrestling program is growing.  It is a great news story for the entire team.”

Good luck at the upcoming OUA and USports Championships Thunderbirds!
