Art, Music, and Meaning on the West Coast – Alumni Profile

Jackson Reed’s (BA Music ‘21) journey as an artist and educator began at Algoma University, where he pursued a double focus in music and visual art. With a major in guitar performance, his studies explored both classical and jazz techniques, while also giving him the freedom to develop his own songwriting voice. In the visual arts department, he experimented with film photography, screen printing, and drawing—mediums that often intertwined with his music projects.

“Some of my most memorable experiences included playing gigs and shows with friends, and collaborating on creative projects across disciplines,” Jackson recalls. “Toward the end of my degree, I poured a lot of energy into recording original songs and creating a music video on film, with accompanying visual work. It was an intense and rewarding process that really tied my passions together.”
That spirit of creative collaboration and interdisciplinary exploration followed Jackson beyond graduation. Today, he teaches in the remote village of Maaqutisiis, located in the traditional territory of the Ahousaht First Nation. Accessible only by a 30-minute boat ride from Tofino, the community is home to a powerful blend of culture, ceremony, and connection to the land.

Jackson was drawn to this work by his own formative experiences in high school, where music and community were deeply intertwined. “I still remember sitting in my high school guitar class thinking, This could be a really meaningful job—just teaching young people to enjoy music and support them in their interests.

That philosophy continues to shape his approach in the classroom today. Rooted in inquiry-based, trauma-informed, and student-centered practices, Jackson focuses on creating emotionally safe spaces where students feel supported and empowered to explore creativity in meaningful ways. Whether through music, visual art, or storytelling, students are encouraged to express themselves, ask big questions, and connect with their culture and identity.

His teaching is deeply influenced by the local values of the Ahousaht community, guided by the school’s core principles: Iisaakstalth (respect one another), Hahuupstalth (teach one another), Ya?akstalth (care for one another), and Huupiitstalth (help one another). These teachings create a foundation for relational and responsive education that is aligned with both cultural traditions and students’ real-life needs.

One of the most impactful projects Jackson helps lead is the school’s annual feast—a potlatch that brings together visiting nations to share food, songs, and dances. Students take part in all aspects of preparation, from creating formline artwork and cedar jewelry to harvesting and cooking traditional foods. “These experiences are holistic and healing, connecting students to culture, community, and each other,” he says.

Living on the west coast has also had a profound impact on Jackson’s personal and artistic life. Surrounded by mountains, ocean, and rainforest, he describes the landscape as both grounding and inspiring. “Life here has a strong rhythm—tied to tides, seasons, and ceremony. It’s helped me slow down and pay attention in new ways.”

Outside the classroom, Jackson stays engaged in a variety of creative and community-based projects. He’s helping revitalize the school garden, which has become a vibrant hub for hands-on learning and food sovereignty. He continues to make music and art—often in collaboration with students—and takes part in local artisan markets, environmental activism, and political workshops. “It’s all connected,” he reflects, “whether in the classroom or on the land. I’m thankful to be doing this work.”
