More Than Numbers: Kelly Maidens on the Gift of Compassion and Balance

Kelly Maidens (BBA 97’) knows that a career in finance is about more than just numbers. It is about people, balance, and the steady hand required to guide families through their most difficult moments.

As a Senior National Financial Planning Account Director at Desjardins Independent Network, Kelly draws on more than 27 years of experience to support advisors across Canada. Yet, he traces the core of his professional philosophy back to the classrooms and hallways of Algoma University.

During his time at what was then known as Algoma University College, Kelly was a fixture of campus life. While completing his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) (Honours), he balanced his studies with roles as the Bar Services Manager in the Speakeasy and part-time positions in both the Registrar’s Office and Student Services. These early opportunities allowed him to engage deeply with the student community and develop the leadership and administrative skills that would define his future career.

After graduating in 1997, Kelly began a steady ascent through the financial services industry. His path included six years at the Royal Bank of Canada, where he progressed from Customer Service Manager to Branch Manager. He later served as an independent agent with Sun Life Financial before joining Desjardins Caisse Populaire Ontario in 2005. Over 17 years there, he specialized in comprehensive financial planning and estate administration, managing more than 200 estates per year.

Kelly credits the unique environment of Algoma U for preparing him for such a high-stakes career. He notes that the smaller, diverse classes created an environment rich with perspective and dialogue. This intimacy allowed professors the space to share real-world experiences that deepened their understanding of the curriculum.

Equally influential was the University’s cultural landscape. Kelly explains that the caring Indigenous influences and history at Algoma U helped solidify the human aspect of respect for all people and the importance of bringing balance to all things. The University’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation offered him a profound lesson in listening and valuing every individual’s story. These experiences taught him to view every client as a whole person, a perspective that continues to guide his work today.

One of his proudest achievements is being named an FP Canada Fellow. This distinction recognizes his leadership and his commitment to advancing the financial planning profession. While he values professional excellence and mentorship, Kelly finds the most meaning in the quiet moments of service. He believes the true purpose of expertise is to provide clarity and compassion to those grieving the loss of a loved one. For Kelly, the work matters most when it brings comfort, dignity, and peace to others.

To the next generation of students at Algoma University, Kelly offers a simple piece of advice: “Read for at least 15 minutes a day on a subject you know nothing about,” he shared, explaining that he believes this habit expands thinking and builds the curiosity necessary to form connections across different fields.

Today, Kelly remains connected to the Algoma U community and takes pride in seeing fellow alumni succeed and the region continue to grow. He stays closely tied to the institution that shaped his early years and his lasting commitment to service.
