(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON- January 21, 2022): Today, the Ministry of Colleges and Universities announced the winners of the Minister of Colleges and Universities’ Awards of Excellence.  Algoma U’s very own Dr. Nirosha Murugan was recognized with the Rising Star award for her innovative research and excellence in teaching. 

The annual Awards of Excellence celebrate the incredible work of faculty, staff and graduate students on campuses, in communities and beyond throughout Ontario. Nominees are demonstrated leaders in post-secondary education, and Dr. Murugan is a prime example.

“It is such an honour to be recognized with such a prestigious award, and I am so thankful for those who have nominated me and continually support my growth as an early career researcher,” shared Dr. Murugan, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology. “I am privileged to be part of this tight-knit community who in their own way are so dedicated to bringing excellence and innovation not only in research but also in teaching, especially during these difficult times. It is inspiring to know that I am part of significant growth and innovation and to be recognized by my students, colleagues and members of the scientific community is truly humbling.”

In recognition of this prestigious award, Dr. Murugan attended a closed session meeting with the Honourable Jill Dunlop, Minister of Colleges and Universities this morning, and will be sent an official certificate signed by the Minister.

Our entire community is extremely proud of you and your ground-breaking research,” shared Vice-President Academic and Research, Dr. Donna Rogers. “You exemplify women in STEM, and your work is clear evidence of the high calibre research being done here at Algoma.
